X4, laying hens especially should have food available at all times, but even well fed hens will rush/chase people once they learn the idea that people bring stuff. If you don't want to scare the chickens to make them stop, iIf there is some way you can arrange it so the birds can't see that the kids are bringing the food, ie they could do it at night when the chickens are up or lock the birds out of the coop while they are feeding, they should give up on chasing people eventually when they don't get rewarded for it.
