Hello all! First post and I hope it's in the right place. I cannot find the answer to this online, but from mysearching on this site there are a lot of knowledgeable chicken wranglers here!
I have purebred Australorps. I am breeding not for SQ, but for size and temperament (and of course egg production).
I've been having shit luck with roosters. I lost my best breeder when he managed to leap the coop fence and find an opportunistic fox. I only have 2 roos in my last group of chicks (I know, terrible problem to have, right?!).
One is heavier (which I like), and ideLly feathered, but is of average temperament and unremarkable comb and wattles (which could just be slower to develop than his counterpart - they are only 4 months).
The other is a smaller bird, of ideal temperament (already showing food gathering for hens and protective instincts), BUT he has some minor rust leakage in his feathers.
As I'm not breeding for show quality, but for meat/eggs/temperament, I don't mind his unique feathers per say, but if I am breeding him I don't want to see the leakage get worse. Is this something that would amplify down the line, or would the hens genetics help dilute it out?
