rusted nesting boxes. how to clean?

I have acquired some of those nice metal nesting boxes. Are they galvanized? Anyway, they are rusted in some spots but someone told me I could wire brush them and paint them with....... rustoleum, I think. Would like some clarification on this. How can I clean those up? They are $179 at the feed store. Mine were free. Also, I suppose I should disinfect them with something - yes? Thanks.

The best thing that I've heard for rust is the old wives' tale...Pour on Coca Cola...It's supposed to eat through the rust...scares me when I think of what it might do to my stomach lining...
