?s about credit cards interest rates crackdown

Banks charge for everything. I switched to credit unions exclusively in 1995 and never looked back. Credit unions have better interest rates and I can use my debit card pretty much anywhere without any charges. You couldnt pay me to switch to a bank. My checking account even pays me a dividend monthly as long as I have 2 deposits and 10 atm transactions... my paycheck automatically deposits so that's twice a month and 10 atm transactions usually happen in the first week or two so I always get a dividend every month. And no I dont have to keep a minimum amount in this account.

B of A and Wells Fargo both are a huge ripoff with their fees and how they deposit your checks in an order that favors them to make sure they get fees....

Go find a credit union... most any one can join most of them.

When my old bank started charging fees just for keeping the account open - I switched banks. My new (and still current) bank pays me to keep money in my account! Granted the rates are so low now it doesn't make any money, but it's the principle!!

Chase bought out one of my Visa cards, and I haven't liked the changes so I opened a new card with US Bank. I can agree with the OP, Chase sucks.
US Bank also holds my mortgage and I have been happy with them so far. Having good credit is really important for getting a mortgage, but otherwise you're probably safer just paying cash.

If your debit or credit info was stolen in the Hannaford data breach thing, you REALLY start thinking about paying cash for everything!

My bank is PNC and I can use my debit card any time, as much as I want (fund availability of course) without any charges at all. This includes any and all WaWa ATMs (owned by PNC) and no atm charges.

I LIVE on my debit card and hardly ever write checks. They also offer free bill pay and online banking. I check my banking/checking just about every day if not every other - and they offer 24/7 Customer Support. I dont pay a debit fee either for having our card and there is overdraft protection as well (never had to use it though so cant tell you how PNC works with it). Free checking as well without minimum daily balances and/or maximum amount of checks you can write (at least for us its that way, we've had our account since 1989...bank buy-outs over the years..eventually turned into PNC a few years ago).

Debit or credit - however you run your debit card for purchase, doesnt matter, it comes out immediately from your account (at least with PNC it does). But it also goes BACK immediately if there is an error or you have a return credited (no hold on it).

Now ya'll have me worried..and I'm calling my bank this morning

Better not be any fee's....

ETA: we also belong to a credit union as well - all financing is done through the CU - banks cannot touch their rates - EVER.

I have two different accounts that I love. First of all, I have a money market account linked to my stock portfolio and they give me checks and a debit card. I get the highest possible interest....maybe even a full ONE PERCENT in this economy, on my money while I use my debit card free. If it would EVER be necessary, I have up to 50% of the value of my stocks available to me on margin. I don't go there, except true emergencies and then I try to transfer money to repay the margin ASAP.

My regular bank is Commerce Bank...now TD Bank. I love it for a number of reasons....open seven days a week with extended drive through hours. Next business day clearing for most deposits. A "yes we can" attitude". Free pens (LOL) and dog biscuits at the drive through. I also found that they have run some Certificate of Deposit specials that no one could beat. Not ALWAYS available, but when I've seen them, fantastic. I also love their online banking.
They do have some fees, like other banks, but I can tolerate it because of their service. Did I also mention 24 hour telephone customer service?

Here's the scoop by my bank

We got free checking and savings accounts, no fees for using them. No overdrawn account protection and they dont offer it. Fees are applied for each and every amount you overdrawn.

The interest rate (mortgage) and loans were good to us for our home and van. Can not complain there! Every utility bill are auto paid.

They also do every payment check, for each debit charge we incurred and if they question about the charges, they would call us. One time they called us about a questionable charge from a business owner in Romania for a digitial camera and we told them that we did not authorized that charge and the bank automatically put a red flag and called the business owner that someone was using our debit card illegially. Another call was for a repeated charged twice auto pay to one of the internet service that we cancelled and the internet business kept charging. We got our money back on that one too! So that was a big PLUS for them to spot questionable charges and they always call us before they pay anything on that charge.

We do have two credit cards, one was paid off and the other one was for emergency surgery for our cat and its a very low amount that we will be able to pay it off in three to four months. The interest rate is 22 percent on one card UGH!

I used to have business with credit union and it was BAD. They didnt want to work with me about lowing payment on my own house nor work with me on the truck payments because I lost my job. So I had to file bankruptcy and the lawyer I had, said that the bank was very difficult to work with and never had that problem before.
