??'s about Humidity durring hatch / how to maintain it?

Hi Leyla!
Thanks..

I do have the eggs up at an angle. I use the "non slip mat" (remember the thingamajigger, lol ) cut into strips and prop them up kinda like a pillow.

I'll try and get a pic later.

I also prefer that non-stick stuff for hatching as I believe the chick has a better escape route when the egg is on its side. However hatching in egg cartons is used by many people and hatcheries and it does help chicks from downing.

I have never lost any too drowning. And I keep my humidity up around 70% at hatch. There have been times it has climbed to 80% during the night and I haven't had any troubles. As long as the humidity does not stay that high for days on end.

I would imagine they would have been fine but I guess it all depends on how high it would have sky rocketed. I know someone that keeps their humidity up to 80% for the entire incubation and hatches eggs with no problem. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it from what I have read on here but they have yet to drown their eggs.

i keep them in the turners as they fit in so nicly, i just pop the turner racks out of the turner and set them on the incubator floor.

i use to use egg cartons before i got the autoturners

I'd like turners, but they're not in the budget at the moment.

I've tried the egg carton for buttons, and wasn't to happy. They just seemed to have a hard time getting out of the shell.

Simple solution....just take on of them yellow sticky notes, write "check water level" on it & tape it on the top of bator that way every time you are checking for chick or pips you will see the note & check your levels. Works for me

MY EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN THAT IF YOU OPEN THE INCUBATOR FOR A SHORT TIME, AND ADD HOT OR WARMED WATER, THE HUMIDITY WILL ONLY DROP BRIEFLY AND GOES RIGHT BACK UP AND DOES NOT EFFECT HATCH RATE . I OPEN MY INCUBATOR DURING HATCHES TO REMOVE THE QUAIL AND PLACE THEM IN ANOTHER INCUBATOR TO DRY. LAST QUAIL HATCH I PLACED 120 IN AND HATCHED OUT 107 WHICH I THOUGHT WAS OK.

I have mixed emotions about hatching upright in cartons as well, but the physics behind it are sound. It's far less likely the chicks will drown if there is to much moister left in the eggs during hatch, but they do seam to have a harder time getting out. I would do a side by side hatch test if I had a decent incubator that didn't kill half my hatch to begin with.
