Hi folks, we have a beautiful Whitetail deer hide that we tanned about 2 or 3 years ago for sale. Finished hides are legal to be sold in Alabama. This hide is not a deer we harvested ourselves - it was responsibly sourced from throwaways at a processors which would normally just be waste. Hide is nice sized about 4 and 1/2 ft tip of tail to top of neck, and about 2 and 1/2 wide in middle section (wider at base) and features a deboned tail still attatched.

People have purchased in the past locally for rugs, or displays for mounts. We had one gentleman recently order one to roll up for a backpack mount to accompany his trophy buck mount. We take the raw hides and pick them up, clean them, and tan them here at the homestead and they come out beautifully. Flexible hide, smooth underside. Very minimal hair slip- please see photos for more details.

Asking $100 with shipping included!

Please message or reply here if interested.

Interested in how you tanned the hide...The last two deer seasons I have worked at a deer processing facility and have seen hundreds of hides go to...somewhere. Did you use salt and alum powder?? I've read a bit about tanning hides and hopefully I can get there next year when hunting season starts.

@GravityWaves - Hi there! I am happy to help provide as much help as I can. I do use the salt/alum method (I use garden aluminum sulfate, you are much more affordable that way than buying food grade "alum powder") but the hides must be smoked afterwards. I learned through trial and error, but eventually a big time tanner explained that alum is the tanning agent but very unstable, and smoking makes it permanent.

In 2019 I made a thread on the sister site to BYC, BackYard Herds. Check it out here:

Tanning Game & Domestic Hides

On the last, most recent page I have some helpful links to some of the books that got me started. I'm happy to talk more about things there and hopefully you will take up trying to tan some hides yourself! Below in spoiler are also two little videos we made talking about tanning hoping to encourage people.
