S. Korea is culling millions of poultry

I think they are killing them because people are far more likely to come in contact with infected chickens then infected wildlife. Not neccessarily going to pick up and snuggle or eat a dying wild sparrow, you know?

It is very unfortunate. Killing is definately not a solution, only a quick fix. The only way killing could be a solution, is if they wiped out the world's population of birds. They hope that culling these millions of birds will save lives in the present time, but this is not 'solving' the problem by any means.

I wonder how they decide which chickens go? and why?

The article didn't say whether they were targeting suspected infected flocks or not.

When there is a problem with "bird flu" in this country, we kill the chickens! Four years ago, over 6500 were killed on one chicken farm in Texas alone. I lived for a year and a half in South Korea and conditions for raising animals were as good as they are here. (the ones I saw anyway). They have a huge population to feed without as much land as we have, but they do an amazing job. I don't mean to preach but if killing the chickens on one farm or several prevents a major outbreak that causes them to have to kill even more, "Kill the Chickens".
