She says she wants to say it was home Lard or grease, mineral oil??? camphoghene (spelling wrong)...Castor oil...something that still maybe lets the Roos mount, but not pull and pick???

Anyone know what it is??? Not to mention Ma left the gate open and her chickens all got out, so she is trying to catch them, they want to range out...they live on 6 acres...but Ma has to leave for Chemo...and if they go to far, the neighbor dogs will killl them....Ideas Please!!!! I said lay food out in the coop around the run....and going towards it....

to help w/the irritation put some gentian violet on it--you can get it at any feed store, it's used on girth sores on horses, etc.

Yes, saddles is the answer
I've see hen saddles for sale on websites that were sort of pricey.

I made a saddle for one of my hens that got her back de- feathered from the roo. I cut an oval of fake fur the size of the chickens back. I measured the distance between her wings/shoulders, and cut holes. and I cut a hole for her tailfeathers. I threaded her wings through the wing slots and slipped the bottom hole over her tailfeathers. Now she is wearing a nice fake fur coat. The roo grabs her coat when he mounts her and does not tear at her flesh and feathers any more. NEAT INVENTION

Oh gosh, No!!! No saddles....my mother in law is 73yrs old...she already thinks Im crazy because I spend alot of time with my chickens, talk to them...and baby them...she is looking for a solution ...like the old times...but thanks guys...

she said her mom use to use some home remeady...some lards or oils...etc...that is what she has me investigating...

Saddles is still the best idea but you're likely thinking of something with camphor in it- like Vicks Vaporub to stop the roo from wanting to pick the hen's feathers. But that won't help heal her or stop him from scratching her up.

Pine tar, sold for horses, works. Maybe it's old timey enough for her.
