Sable goats

As far as I know, they are the same as Saanens, just colored.
They cant be shown as Saanens, but have to be called Sable.
Some people call it a fault, but its a recessive color gene, so it doesnt always breed true (both parents have to carry it or be sable)

Great goats. Produce as much as a Saanen, and have the same docile temperament, but do not have the tendency to develop skin/eye cancers as they have pigmentation. I wouldn't raise anything else.

ETA To clarify the previous poster's mention of their genetics, Saanens are dominant white. Breed a dominant white to a color and you will get white offspring.

I ask because my friend's goat, out of two registered Saanens, is a very light brown color. She wants to sell him because he's related to all the other does there, and since there are almost no Sables in Michigan, she wants to know what she should charge for him.

If there are almost no Sables there he may be a hard sell. I have a hard time selling bucks period, as people keep multiple does and few bucks but obviously bucks make up 50% of the goat population. A breeder friend of mine actually euthanizes them at birth if she can't get them given away in advance. They are registerable, but not usually worth the gas money to take them to the sale.
