I am in unincorporated Sacramento. I have 6000sq but my back yard had a long run. I am getting conflicting info from people I know. Is the 10,000sq thing still in effect?
Can I have hens?

Hi Sac County BYCers. I've had chickens in my backyard for over 6 years and just got a notice from the county that I'm illegally raising them. My lot is just under 10,000 sq ft so evidently I need some type of permit.

I'm waiting for a response back from the zoning folks to get their side but I wanted to see if any other local folks have dealt with this issue. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I live in Citrus Heights. We just got city council to agree to change our ordinance so that we can have a maximum of 6 hens under 10,000 square feet. I believe when they were comparing other areas the unincorporated area of Sacramento County did have some kind of stipulation or permit requirement. I believe the city of Sacramento does allow hens. I'm sorry this is happening. Hopefully, if you do need a permit it isn't too expensive.

I thought that chickens are now allowed in properties that are under 10,000 sq. feet. They expanded the Urban Agriculture Ordinance to include Sac County.

Hmmm... max coop size of 30 square feet doesn't allow for many birds.

I live in Orangevale CA, in one of the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County. I was surprised to find that the local ordinances ban keeping any chickens on properties less than 10,000 square feet which covers pretty much all the houses in my area.

I've just contacted Sac County through their website to ask what the process is to change zoning ordinances and for the name of someone I can talk to.

Is there anyone else out there in Sacramento County that is interested in helping trying to get this changed?

so I live on 1/4 acre and am going to get chickens that is a problem? never would have guessed.

This post is really old. BUT I just moved from Sac County. You can have 1 chicken for every 1000 ft of your lot. You can only have roosters if you have over 10000 ft. I know this because I got reported for my rooster! Lol

The laws have changed since this thread started in 2008. Lucky for you, my friend!

Really, really old post. I responded because I saw @Vactor had posted recently

But LOL! A chicken identifying as a cat! HA! Love it!

But alas... Sac county limits the # of cats you can have to 4 adult cats per property (unless you get a permit). And Fair Oaks has a resident rogue rooster flock. They walk all over old Fair Oaks. They're that area's mascots.
