Sacramento County

Yes!!!! They are a secret mix but they do "contain" jungle fowl, well no sh*t last time i checked all chickens are descendants of jungle fowl. Thank goodness you didnt buy!!! They are not small i believe they are cornish x jersey giant!!! Not sure the age you are wanting or purebred but i have 13 chicks ready to go, no lights needed fully feathered and "weaned" 5 1 week olds and 5 2 week olds still with moms. They are game mix but getting closer to pure hatch by hatch. Got 3 newbies today went to river valley and wanted dutch bantam's to offset my 2 "jungle fowl" girls offspring left with old english game. They are so dinky lol...one momma is very protective and gets a little to aggressive and injured a chick so pukked it out and brought it inside ans it was getting lonely so my son begged me to get it a friend (step dsughters going to be mad, but ill make a deal since river valley is supposed to get blue sumatra the 29th i believe and i want Although i have surgery the 28th but i will send my husband over there it will be our weekend to have her haha and i deserve a present after surgery) or ill take her tomorrow and let her get another oeg. They got busy though so who knows. As far as Belt hatchery, you said exacty what i said via email to the batchery and river valley feed. I am still ******. It through off my developing breed 3 hatches down the line!!!! So now with the bantys they will restore order. The hatch chicks are so dang pretty though! Got incubator and nothing hatched. Didnt use the best eggs it was mostly a test run and now i kind of know the do nots of incubator hatching haha..let me know what you come across at the other place...my husband will kill me if i get anymore but he can get a new car part to make it even.
I totally agree with you on they "contain" JF all chickens do. What a con.

I went up to Lee's in Shingle Springs and their chicks looked really nice. I had to compromise with hubby... I would have risked the S/R bantams but hubby wanted layers & to limit the risk of a cockerel, so the smallest layers that where sexed I could get where EE chicks, so I went with 2 of them... but the assorted bantams they had in looked good, and I am pretty sure the clean dark legged & black beaked blues & black chicks are Sumatra. Might be worth the risk if you want to try and add that DNA in your program. I would have sexed the bantams myself, but it seems everyone has no touch the chicks policy at all the stores... when I worked at a friends feed store he always allowed his customers to examine and choose their own chicks, that's how I learned to sex S/R from the little old ladies from Vietnam. We only ever ended up with 1 rooster, and that was picked by someone else and given to my kids so I think the technique works as long as you do it right, the internet says it does not but I had great success & the old ladies said they did too. I am just happy to have chicks again as I pretty much like many different chicken DNA traits... I will get my feet wet with these girls which should be around 4 lb. hens when mature. It is always fun to see what sort of eggs you get from EEs and they are more wild, which I like in my birds.

I also found out where Lee's orders their birds from: Ideal

My flock lays all year (yes winter too!) and aren't as small as banty's but have smaller eggs than store bought ones. I went back to River Valley Valley got 2 black dutch bantams and 2 golden yellow Old English Game bantam, the one we got the day before died, 2 black dutches are great, the 2 golden yellow died this morning. The other 2 OEG banty's are fine. Personally in the last 3 years I've lost 3 originals, 2 the dog got, first hatch 1st baby one of the hens killed, 1 chick sudden death 2 weeks ola, 1 chick sudden death 2 weeks old the next hatch, this hatch season lost 3 to rats (I assume the culprits)1 after dry shell hatch, and 1 got out some how and the dog got her and the 3 new ones has brought me up to 16. We cry every time. But I dBut I don't think we will be purchasing from them anymore! Especially since the staff is clueless to chicken breeds. Tried to tell me these giant chicks were bantams and the smaller which I got the day before were Brahma's I had to set them straight. Good luck with your girls! I will check out your new store LoL. I have to start re homing soon. I hate that part, but it's a most

You might want to take the trip up 50 to Lee's in Shingle Springs 4110 Mother Load (right off the freeway real easy to find)... though the Bantams are assorted all the chicks are well cared for & seemed healthy the 2 times I slogged up there. The store is actually 3 stores, they have a nice supply of tons of stuff, including pond plants and fish. They keep the chickens outside of the building behind the hay building, not the one with the pond stuff out side.

Off the top of my head:
Various Ducks & Turkeys, Guinea Fowl

Chickens:

Assorted Bantam
Rhode Island Reds
Black Australorps
Buff Orpingtons
Silver Wyandottes
Delaware
Polish Assorted
Crevecouer
Speckled Sussex
Salmon Faverolles
Ameraucana AKA EE
Cornish Rock
Giant Jersey
Brahmas
Cochins
Sex Link
Cornish Rock

There where more breeds I think I just can not remember them all. The only reason I went with the EEs is size & sexed so hubby happy not stressed (he worries a lot, and is very ill... cancer, and we both like different colored eggs) I figure down the road I will find RJF, and the various other breeds I would like to keep someday... hopefully when I retire (not for a long while yet) I can move to a rural area zoned for roosters and breed my own birds. One part of me loves long-tail breeds the other hard feathered little T-Rexes... LOL.

Also you might want to call Carmichael Western Feed and Supply and ask when they are getting chicks next and what breeds they expect in... it seems to me they are getting some in soon too.

All of the western feed stores get their chicks on Thursdays. They don't all get chicks though, I know roseville doesn't get chicks, and there was one other store that doesn't get them but I can't remember which one. I'll have to go and check out Lee's too, do you remember if they had dark brahmas, by any chance? :)

I'm having chicken withdrawals. I got i letter from sac county for a code violation. So far I've been a few weeks without chickens and feels like something in my life is missing. :/ . It just doesn't make sense. Sacramento city allows it, but the county doesn't. I live in the Vineyard area so I'm practically surrounded by small rural farms and Bradshaw Feed a 2 minute drive from my house, yet I can't keep any chickens. Even neighboring Elk Grove allows chickens now. I'm gonna try to write to my district's board supervisor , but not sure how much I can get changed, since someone must really hate chickens if the permit is $8,500. I really don't understand why chicken laws aren't looser, especially since sacramento has been pushing to be distinguished as the "farm to fork" capital. Sorry for the rant, just bummed for the loss of my flock. :/

Everyone: The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors will put this to a vote on July 22, 2015 at 2:00 PM unless they postpone. You must call in 72 hours in advance to see if there has been a change of time/date. I want to ask all of you who can attend to please do so. Otherwise, please call, Facebook, Tweet and/or email all 5 Supervisors. Heck, try getting ahold of the News and Review, KCRA the Sac Bee or any other media sources you can think of. Don't give up your flocks without a fight! When I called the Supervisor's office they said that this proposal to change the County's residential zoning ordinance is still in the development stage and further studies may be necessary.
PLEASE READ PAGE 2 OF THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY CHICKEN OWNERS FORUM for more details. I am adding the County's FAQ page blow:

Frequently Asked Questions
Proposal to Ban Crowing Fowl on Urban Residential Properties

May, 2015

This FAQ provides information about a pending amendment to the County’s zoning requirements that would prohibit Crowing Fowl on residentially zoned properties in the urban portion of the County.
What is the definition of crowing fowl and what kind of fowl may be prohibited?

The proposal calls to prohibit "any rooster, peacock, goose, quacking duck, guinea fowl". Hen chickens are not banned by this code amendment.
Where does this apply?
The proposed ban would apply to properties in unincorporated County that are in an urban residential zoning category. This includes any residential properties zoned RD-1, RD-2, RD-5, RD-7 or RD-10. Apartment zoning already prohibits such animals.
This proposal does not apply to any of the Cities within the County as they have their own zoning regulations. This proposal does not apply to agricultural-residential or agricultural zoned properties (AR-1 through AR-10 and AG-20 through AG-160).
Why is this proposal being considered?
The County has received complaints over many years about crowing fowl, typically roosters, throughout the urban portion of the County.
When is the proposal up for a vote?
The Board of Supervisors will consider the updated Sacramento County Development Code, including this new provision, at their hearing of July 22, 2015.
If adopted, how and when would the ban become effective?
If the updated Development Code is approved at the Board hearing of July 22, 2015, the provisions become effective 30 days after the hearing, on or about August 22, 2015. If your property is currently used to keep or raise crowing fowl, you will have one year to become compliant and remove the animals (late August of 2016). The regulations apply to the use of land for crowing fowl, not individual fowl. If you currently raise or keep crowing fowl and a fowl dies, it may be replaced within 90 days, as long as the use of land for crowing fowl ceases by the one year expiration.
If you do not currently use your property to keep or raise crowing fowl, the prohibition would become effective as of August 22, 2015. 2
Will the County consider additional provisions related to this topic including the keeping of chickens?

The County has been approached by interest groups to address the topic of Urban Agriculture. It is possible that additional research, outreach to the public, and Board discussions could result in revisiting the topic of the keeping of crowing fowl. In fact, the Board specifically indicated that this is an interim measure pending more focus on the topic of Urban Agriculture.
What will happen to feral roosters, particularly in the Old Fair Oaks Community?
The proposed Ordinance only addresses the keeping of crowing fowl including roosters on privately owned residential properties. In addition, Old Town Fair Oaks is known for its collection of wild or feral roosters. Therefore, the County will not seek to remove these roosters (or hen chickens) as a result of this ordinance change.
For more information, please contact Tricia Stevens, Principal Planner, at [email protected].

To Liz with all the chickens in Fair Oaks:

Yes, it is a problem in Fair Oaks, a big one. We just got an email from Tricia, one of the Board of Supervisors' minion. The ordinance previously stated and still states that residents with lots under 10,000 square feet cannot keep chickens in unincorporated sections of Sacramento County. The proposed amendment to the zoning code now states that all residential lots REGARDLESS OF LOT SIZE cannot keep crowing fowl. There is no change to the regulation for hens. Susan Peters told us in her Fair Oaks Coffee Meeting on May 20, 2015 that lots over an acre would not be subject to this restriction. Not so. The Board of Supervisors' FAQ page states that Old Town Fair Oaks (AKA Fair Oaks Village) "feral roosters" would be exempt...but its residents would not be. Previously, if you had an acre+ plus you could have up to 3 roosters per acre. There is nothing written about Old Town Fair Oaks' exemption in the complete amendment's documentation. None of us property owners with 10,000+ square feet received any notice by mail of any of the proposed zoning changes that are to be voted on. When confronting Susan Peters office, we were told that we should have been attending all of her community meetings and then we would have been informed...at 7:30 AM on a weekday??? Don't we have to work or get our kids off to school?

CALL EMAIL, FACEBOOK, TWITTER ALL OF 5 OF YOUR SUPERVISORS BEFORE THEY VOTE ON JULY 22, 2015 AND COME TO THE MEETING AT 2:00 PM !!! Tell each one of them that you would like them to vote NO on this proposal to amend the zoning code to ban all crowing fowl. Come early to fill out a speaker form if you wish to tell them what you think. Make sure to call 72 hours in advance to check for changes or postponements.

I'm so glad I came across this today! I live in sac county and I have roosters. I will be calling and writing and doing my best to keep them. How someone can tell me what to do on my property is beyond me. I live next to a major thorough way and that is loud. The trains that go by are loud, the cars with illegal exhaust systems and stereos are loud, yeah my roosters Are loud but I make them hush. Not to many dog owners do. Where will all my roos go?The pound? Slaughter? I'm so angry right now!

Hi Broody-Bunch: Me again. Thanks to Don Nattoli, the 5th District Supervisor, we were able to get the crowing fowl ban postponed until Oct 30, 2015. Comments made at the July 22 meeting suggested that the Board would like to see a few more bodies who are opposed to this code amendment and would like to keep this issue under Animal Control's Noise Nuisance Division. Roberta MacGlashan, the Supervisor who is in charge of Orangevale also suggested that in the future the Board might consider AR (Ag residential) properties to be lumped in with this ban as well. Orangevale has quite a few properties under the AR zoning designation.

We still have a chance to keep this vote from passing. If at all possible, please gather anyone who is concerned about keeping their roosters to attend any meeting with any reference to "crowing fowl" on the agenda and fill out a speaker form. They are supposed to post the agenda and when/if a meeting is to be held 72 hours in advance. Find out what will be on the agenda for both Tuesday and Wednesday meetings in Sept and Oct. This month's 2:00 PM Wed meeting was canceled, but it was not posted on the Sac County site. You may have to call.
Please, we need your all of your voices to ring out loud and proud. We really want to keep our male fowl and prevent a countywide dumping of roosters. Few shelters accept roosters because most are already full. The County Animal Shelter will only take "stray" chickens. I know this because I called every shelter and sanctuary in the area this morning. The supervisors did not factor into their planning reasonable locations where folks can relinquish their roosters, nor did they express what will happen to said fowl afterward. Chairman Serna suggested that they might waive the $50 turn-in fee at the County Animal Shelter on Bradshaw- whose staff told me they currently do not accept "owned roosters". If the County prohibits folks with large properties from keeping roosters, then who will be able to adopt them from shelters or take in strays? You can look up this meeting on their website at
http://www.agendanet.saccounty.net/sirepub/mtgviewer.aspx?meetid=11557&doctype=SUMMARY. Here is a snapshot of the outcome of the July 22, 2015 meeting:

AYES: Patrick Kennedy, Roberta MacGlashan, Susan Peters, Phil Serna
NOES: Don Nottoli
