Sacramento County

I am going to be able to get chickens! Only a couple and probably only hens and we have not worked out which breed yet, but finally after over 15 years of being sans birds some things have changed. I am thinking bantam or smaller sized (4lb) standards. But that is okay as I want to try out some new things out from when I last had birds.

All this new blows! We are thinking about relocating to the area and have chickens and ducks. We live downtown Colorado Springs and we can have 10 (most people have more) chickens. I can't imagine moving without the birds!

@manychitlens http://portal.cityofsacramento.org/Community-Development/Planning/Long-Range/Urban-Agriculture you should see if there is a loophole that will allow you to up your chicken amount. Read the new ordinance and then maybe contact an advocacy agency who helped with the new ordinance. I believe you have to have a permit that costs a ridiculous amount otherwise. Where there's a will there's a way. @Lauravonsmurf I am so excited for you! I have bantamish sized chickens and 2 very large girls who I purchased with 2 of their even larger brothers from a feed store who they went through Belt Hatchery Who call them Belt Hatchery Jungle Fowl... I purchased what I believed to be Jungle Fowl. They got huge! Fast! Became very aggressive and my bird anxiety started kicking in. They were rehomed girls are still here, they're big ol goober dorkisis. They are Belt Hatcheries trade secret mix so my best guess is a Cornish x Jersey Giant. The One time I buy chicks I get the wrong kind. I was just trying to add new bloodlines not dinosaur Genetics. The black ones on the outside are the big dudes the black one in the middle is my normal breed. BTW outside Roos 5 Mos old in that pic, middle 9 Mos old.

@Bill1st make sure you move to unicorporated county with 10,000 Sq ft minimum property size or to Fair Oaks

I like dino chickens lol, but that is not the kind I need... you probably had Sapian JF which is very huge! If I get JF I want Red JF which are small hens only 4 lbs max.

I am thinking bantams maybe sumatras or phoenix.

I got them from the feed store who had them listed as red Jungle, but as they grew my previous research had me questioning the breed of my chicks. So I emailed the hatchery and their response was that they were not Jungle Fowl, they were a mix of two they wouldn't disclose a trade secret. The Asian community kept calling them Jungle Fowl so they coined the name "Belt Hatchery" Jungle Fowl. I told them well its very misleading and I let the feed store know as well. You and I have the same train of chicken breed thoughts LOL. Those are all my faVes and wants!(Well what I want to add in to make my own breed eventually, Chickasaurus Rex's kind of through me off!) I also love the American Game Bantam! My floCK is game fowl color but all leg coloring and multiple comb styles present. Smallest hen is maybe 2 lbs. Broody girls\great mothers\ fathers are great too!, layers year round with proper light in winter, and hours upon hours of research and observation. I'm obviously a big fan OF them. I just converted my gazebo into their coop. My son has a daily chicken ritual as well and is planning his trip to the F.0. Chicken Festival an ready, he just turned 5.

Oh you guys will get a kick out of the Chicken Festival. It's wacky good family fun.

That is very misleading of the hatchery crossing birds and calling them something they are not.

I like the look of American Game bantams better than the OEG bantams. I realized one of the things I like about certain Asian breeds is the low set tail... sumatras, yokohamas, asils and such all have a sort of body shape/angle I really like. Your birds sound beautiful. But then I like some breeds that are total opposites... Sultans are cool too, and chabos just plain cute. But I want to focus on more of the long tail types this time around as I never have kept them before (except for Vietnamese JF I had that before & loved her very different behaviors)

Awesome on getting eggs year round. Right now I am prepping for the birds... must conquer jungle AKA the backyard, get bricks laid out and then coop on top. I started the yard clearing & brick laying Sunday, just need to lay more over the next few days and then building time.

We did the festival last year, it was fun want to get there earlier though lol. I want to get a few phoenix hens wanted to broody hatch the eggs, obviously no sex guarantee, but they are $20 an egg locally. I like imprinting the chicks because them you get easier handling with the game fowl. I bet you are so excited where are you getting your chickens from? Another breed similar to the AGB is the Dutch bantam which is a true bantam and they are pretty. I almost got some the other day but I have two clutches of eggs plus 18 chicks plus my adults. LoL...babies are probably old enough to be away from moms, my one hen has plucked my other hen and then I seen this site last night the red one is the hen lol

I have not figured out where I am getting the birds from yet, but I am pretty sure last Saturday I found a feed store a county over that had bantam sumatras... they where not ided other than assorted bantams, but I know a sumatra chick when I see one.

But I promised my self no birds till coop built! So that is this Saturdays project build coop! Then and only then can I get birds. Yes, the Dutch are pretty too, I have been lookking at pictures of them, very nice & I can see how they got used in the Pheonix.

Bruddy Bunch did you buy from RiverValley off of Elkhorn & 16th?

I went there today as they said on the phone they where getting RJF today, and the chicks where not RJF... weird mixes, all wrong colored, different sizes & stances even... I did not get any chicks. I do not want Fake JF and yes they where "Belt". I will go up the hill & call around, I need smaller sized breeds and having had Vietnamese RJF before I thought they would be nice again as I really enjoyed them in the past. I personally think Belt is doing false advertising... the feed store will sell the chicks as IDed by the hatchery, that is normal... but JF are a very specific "breed" of the wild form and to sell mystery mixes as JF is wrong. Further to give the store labels of RJF images to mark the cages that clearly portray RJF is wrong too.

I got no chicks as several breeds did not look right to me, and I rather be picky, I am open to several breeds but I do not want to get chicks that might be too big for the coop.

Yes!!!! They are a secret mix but they do "contain" jungle fowl, well no sh*t last time i checked all chickens are descendants of jungle fowl. Thank goodness you didnt buy!!! They are not small i believe they are cornish x jersey giant!!! Not sure the age you are wanting or purebred but i have 13 chicks ready to go, no lights needed fully feathered and "weaned" 5 1 week olds and 5 2 week olds still with moms. They are game mix but getting closer to pure hatch by hatch. Got 3 newbies today went to river valley and wanted dutch bantam's to offset my 2 "jungle fowl" girls offspring left with old english game. They are so dinky lol...one momma is very protective and gets a little to aggressive and injured a chick so pukked it out and brought it inside ans it was getting lonely so my son begged me to get it a friend (step dsughters going to be mad, but ill make a deal since river valley is supposed to get blue sumatra the 29th i believe and i want Although i have surgery the 28th but i will send my husband over there it will be our weekend to have her haha and i deserve a present after surgery) or ill take her tomorrow and let her get another oeg. They got busy though so who knows. As far as Belt hatchery, you said exacty what i said via email to the batchery and river valley feed. I am still ******. It through off my developing breed 3 hatches down the line!!!! So now with the bantys they will restore order. The hatch chicks are so dang pretty though! Got incubator and nothing hatched. Didnt use the best eggs it was mostly a test run and now i kind of know the do nots of incubator hatching haha..let me know what you come across at the other place...my husband will kill me if i get anymore but he can get a new car part to make it even.
