Sad about roadkill guinea

How very sad! So sorry about the boys getting hit. Even worse that it looks like one was intentional.

I’ve lost three of my original 16. One Keet died of severe pasty butt and I was a clueless newbie. Though I did save one from it. Second developed a major impaction that I caught too late. And my young pup left unsupervised by my kids cornered one early this spring and plucked out all its back feathers. Poor thing was frozen when I found it😭 It hurts to lose them.

Thanks My2butterflies. I’m sorry that you lost those keets, but glad your remaining little flock is doing well. My dog just grabbed a guinea hen that flew into her fence, and she almost killed it. Things have been too interesting in guineadom here!

Oh boy! I hope she recovers ok.
I think I remember being told that it was unlikely that dogs could catch guineas. Such a lie. 😝 My guineas aren’t that fast and they don’t fly. Just flutter above the ground like a chicken.

Mine are reasonably savvy with dogs. This girl, Scout Red, was on the far side of the dog fence with her core group. They know from experience not to go in the dog yard. To teach them, I’ve taught my beagle to run after them. The sudden rush teaches them to fly up. My Doberman’s too fast for them so I try to keep them apart. So, the Doberman was out and she saw the guineas on the far side of her fence (outside) and she ran at them. They panicked and flew up and over the dog yard, but one forgot the fence on the far side and flew into this instead of over it! She was stunned and the dog grabbed her. This same thing happened to her one year ago! Then, I ran around to the gate and rescued the guinea, who just lost a few feathers. This time, the dog really went at her much faster. By the time I got to her, she’d ripped out a LOT of feathers and lacerated her side; I could see muscle showing. Pic below of one of three piles of feathers! She only has a few feathers left on her right wing and her tail!

I don’t have a good recovery area for the guineas where they’d still be with the flock, so I cleaned the wound and gave her a shot of oxytetracycline. I wasn’t sure that SR could still fly but she is still able to fly upwards to the roost; I also put in a “ladder” to help her get there. She’s now really tentative with the other guineas and her feathers look terrible, but she’s doing as well as I could hope...
