Thank you all,I really think it was for the best. My friend did it who is very experienced so it was quick. I'll try in the future never to incubate when it's very hot outside and I can't control temperatures, because all this was my fault.
And some good news! My favourite hen is showing broody behaviour again. I number her eggs and let her be. No high hopes, but you never know.
 
That must be heartbreaking... There's someone I know that's taking care of a quail that's blind because an air sac in the brain apparently burst and popped the eye sockets out. It's unfortunate that these things happen and it's a pretty difficult choice to decide what's best. In your situation, I do think it was better that you ended her suffering quickly instead of letting her die painfully. Stay strong.
