Sad Day... Dog killed 37 meaties

When I first got my chickens, I was scared to death the my lab/pittie mix was going to want to eat all. We took them out on leashes and they acted crazy. One evening before I could get everyone in, my BF brought our dogs out to play frisbee and ball. Much to my surprise even when the chickens freaked out at the dogs running in their direction, the dogs stopped looked at them and then must of thought playing catch was a much better idea then chasing chickens. I don't worry about the dogs, even though I'd never leave them alone. Both of our dogs are mixes and they seem to do the best. If your looking for a "breed" go to the animal shelter and safe a life that will most likely be at your beckon call.

jemmasgrandma, I'm sorry about your birds.

well at the risk of raising an argument... the dog is my husbands. I do not like dogs, I have never liked dogs so I'm not attached to the dog at all. To each his own I say... Zack is going to live at DH's kennel partners house!! yes! --now what to do about the other 25 beagles that are out in the kennels. YIKES be diligent, be watchful, be careful...protect my chickens!

I was prepared to process...had been watching lots of you tube videos in the last couple of weeks so I kind of knew what I was doing, and DH has cleaned lots of rabbits & game birds/animals in the past so he was lots of help. Chicken on the menu for Sunday dinner

I know your pain. Last summer my husband's husky and my border collie killed 75 guineas and chickens in a span of about 20 minutes. They just went through and broke every one of their necks.

I told my husband that if when I went outside and found the carnage, if I had a gun in my hand, both dogs would have been dead. I was furious.

I warned him that if it ever happened again, both dogs were gone. I have put too much time, money and effort into my chickens to have them killed by errant dogs. I love my border collie. She sleeps in my bed at night with me but I won't have her killing my chickens.

I'm sorry that you had to go through that.

It's awful to see all the chickens just laying there dead or half dead... I was shocked that one beagle could do that much killing in just a few minutes. I likened it to that Wack-A-Mole game at the arcades... 75 birds???? I'm sure you were as sick as I was losing 37 -I was so disgusted with that dog.

I was sick. And on top of it, they killed my Gold Laced Cochin bantams that were my prized chickens. They were my babies. They would jump into my lap and onto my shoulder. My husband knew that I wasn't kidding. He built a very strong pen for the dogs. They haven't escaped it again.

Its ironic....my chickens roam free and my dogs are penned....all except for my Great Pyrenees.

oh my goodness, you had it way worse than me... at least we were able to process them to offset some of the cost. And knowing they were going in the freezer from the get go made it easier, the whole carnage thing was a bit too much to handle though

I have had a similar situation and feel your pain. I had 30 10 wk old birds (27 pullets/3 cockerals) get killed by 4 dogs, 2 of mine and 2 neighbor ones, on 4/30/10! These were for eggs and they had grown so beautifully...not one had died from my order even from shipping. I was devastated, but the next day went to the local F & S and got 12 more! They have been laying for 1 week now!

My problem was poor security of the run. Get your coop/run secure and you will see success! We live and learn.

My dog did this too.. what a nightmare..
She killed my most favorite duck..ever. Plus many others..
I'd never get rid of my dog for it though.. its not her fault.. its mine for not being more diligent..
