Hey all, I finally got my hands on (what I think) is a really nice line of Ameraucana. Here’s my roo at 5 months old - will he stand a chance at a show? Can I breed him to make it better?

Also I have read the breed standard but I have a really hard time telling what that all should look like, since there’s never any pictures 🤣 help a newbie out!

I think he looks nice but what color is he?
here are the accepted colors. if a color isn't accepted I think you have to show a pen of 3 pullets don't know for sure where you are from and what the rules are for different shows and places but that is the rule where I am

what color is he?
He's splash.
Some sources online say splash became a recognized color variety in Ameraucanas in 2023, but I'm not sure about the specifics of it – bantams or large fowl, everywhere or only in America, etc. I'm not an Ameraucana breeder, nor am I very familiar with their standard.

That being said, he could be bred to black or blue hens to hatch blue chicks, if you'd rather breed blues or if splash isn’t accepted where you're located.
Can I breed him to make it better?
I can't really comment on his type or quality, since I haven't looked into the Ameraucana standard, but if you understand what his strengths and weaknesses are, you can select some hens that compliment his features, and breed them for a chance to hatch better quality chicks. He'll fill out more as he ages, and it'll be much easier to properly assess his quality when he'll be fully mature.
Though, I'm not really sure what you're asking. Obviously breeding him won't make him any better 😂 but if you're interested in breeding Ameraucanas for show in general, there's always a chance for improvement with every generation. It all depends on how you select the birds you want to breed for the best outcome.
Also I have read the breed standard but I have a really hard time telling what that all should look like, since there’s never any pictures 🤣
Try looking at lots of photos of Ameraucanas at shows. Look at winners and losers, try to figure out what made them get the result they got, what you like and dislike about them. That's what I did a lot when I was learning the standard of my breed. Websites for breed clubs often have a gallery you can look at. Find breeders with good quality birds on social media, like on Facebook, Instagram, etc. and follow them to get an idea of what good quality birds look like, and what they consider show-worthy.
At least that's what I've done in the past.
