Hey, if someone could respond asap that would be great. My old english game hen (~9 years old) has had noises while mostly beak closed breathing (if open, not super wide, just slightly), she isn't lethargic which is good, she is still trying to be active and alert, she did have foam like bubbles in her eye and swollen face but they have been reduced by a vet given treatment. I don't think I can get her in on the weekend if we need to go, but can anyone identify what she has and any remedies we can give for now? I've isolated her of course. Please let me know your thoughts, thank you

Hi,

Do you know what the vet gave her? I would presume an antibiotic for an upper respiratory infection, or Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG). That should have helped her breathing too.

How long since she finished what the vet prescribed?

You might want to try the old-fashioned vaporizer or some method of increasing the humidity where she's at. I'd also put her on a vitamin regimen every other day with Poultry Cell or Nutri-Drench in her water. That will help her fight whatever this is.

Has she been laying eggs? Have you noticed her walking funny, like a penguin?

After you let us know what she was on and the last time she had it, and whether or not you're going to get her in to a vet, we can advise you of an antibiotic you can purchase online.

I looked it up and her breed generally lives 8-15 years, so she's getting up there. Hopefully, she'll get past this and live a few more!

Well I didn't go to the vet with her, someone else did as I was sick myself. He gave us 'Framixin ointment' 5gm rather than an actual antibiotic, to apply to both eyes twice daily for unspecified amount of days. It might be because our chicken wasn't doing the noise before and during the vet, it happened after so it was only for her swollen face and foamy eyes.

I'll try some of those things cause I heard steam might be better. I don't know if she really lays eggs in general, or atleast not as often, which might just be because of her age or other factors, and I believe she still walks normally, runs even. Also I do want to buy antibiotics but would it get here in time before what she has worsens? That's what I'm worried about.

I do thank you for your time to give me advice and hopefully it will all workout for her but let me know if you have additional thoughts

That ointment probably made her feel a lot better, but isn't going to help what sounds to be an upper respiratory infection.

I've ordered antibiotics twice, both times from Twin City, and it took about 4 days.

@Eggcessive, one who knows more about drugs than I, said this from Amazon will work, and you'd get it faster.

Tiagard (Tiamulin, Denagard) to treat mycoplasma respiratory disease
https://www.amazon.com/Aurora-TiaGard-Concentrate-Generic-Denagard/dp/B0B4T4Y9B1

Dosage is 2 ml per quart of water for 5 days.

I take that back. I just saw you're in Australia. Gosh, I'm sorry. Can you get that there?

I went to the first link first, and then looked the antibiotic up from there, and it sounds like that's going to work for her! The dosage for pigeons, will be fine for her.

½ teaspoon per quart of drinking water
(or ~2.5 g per liter)

Give as the only water source for 5–7 days.
