Sad day, I will have to rehome...

I found it! Here is the link...makes sense to me

Rooster red does have a wonderful article about aggressive roos but doesn't say anything about not letting them mate in front of you.
This is the article I see about that:

http://shilala.homestead.com/roosters.html

Clarification: My boys all free range and are only in with the hens at bedtime. I've gotten fertilized eggs, so I know what they are doing in there with the lights out! But during most of the day they are separated. We will keep one roo, the rest are either going to new homes or they are going into the stew pot this fall.

Hijack over, please continue, this is most educational.

I have never heard this. Sometimes my roos mate in front of me and sometimes they don't. They are all nice here. I don't think that makes them mean at all. I had 2 mean ones at one time and they didn't mate in front of me.

I read that too. From what you describe though, your roo is not doing anything wrong, nor being agressive.

It sounds like he is a fine rooster just doing what is natural. The fact that he lets you carry him around for so long, seems to show that he is tame.

Why not just let him know you are the alpha rooster by re directing him if you wish but then let him alone?

He doesn't sound agressive to me, just a normal male animal.

Only my opinion and I have only had chickens for a year or less....

It's a matter of common courtesy. I don't do it in front of him and I expect the same consideration. Now foreplay, thats a different matter. LOL.

Nuggetsowner:) :

I believe it may have been rooster red as well as others that told me this. I will keep looking. It had something to do with the fact that you alone should be seen as the alpha roo and therefore a rooster should not be allowed to mate in front of you. I will go look for that original thread again. It was along time ago, almost a year. If it wasn't rooster red I will let you know!

OMG I have never heard of such a thing . ITS the roosters job to mate with the hens whether you are there OR NOT . NOTHING wrong with this rooster , and if you rehome him for this reason alone , that is simply not fair at all .

YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING RIGHT ?

or AM I? Only the chickens know, and they're not talking.

It doesn't sound like he's been agressive toward humans. Maybe he won't be.

It's really hard to stop a roo from mating... I think impossible. And yes, I too, have read that it's a good idea to keep them from mating in front of you - kinda like you're the one in charge, but that doesn't mean that he's gonna be agressive with humans/children.

And wow, you really have spent a lot of time with him. Very impressive.
