My question is can a chick actually die of loneliness? I recently had two d'uccle eggs hatch and one passed away a couple days later. He had a malformed leg and I am pretty sure other internal issues. Now the other one was alone. I placed a teddy bear in with him but he chirped all the time. My 4 year old held it as much as she could, and we occassionally placed other older chicks in with him for attention. But now today he was very lethargic and just passed away. He seemed completely healthy until the other chick passed away. It is a sad day in my home and I am getting very discouraged. Does anyone know can they truly die of loneliness?

So sorry for your loss.
It is possible that he was lonely, chickens are social, flocking creatures. They really like to be in a group.
It is possible that he was just ill, because baby chicks do often die for no seemingly apparent reason.
