Hi everyone. It's been a while since I've posted here. Today we butchered our 6 roosters and it seems our 4 hens are depressed about it. Now, I don't want to get all Disney here and think my chickens are actually depressed, but they are acting so quiet and hesitant. Are they just relaxing now that those pesky boys are gone? Or do you think they are actually upset or scared?

Maybe they just feel different. They know there's been a huge change.

Are you really going to tell me that they KNOW what is going on? We were nearby, but the hens were off foraging in the garden. Several of them were eating bugs under the pumpkin leaves and corn stalks.

I know they sense a change in the coop...but they don't come to the door when I bring treats.

They'll come around.

They just have to adjust to the change. I wouldn't worry too much.

I agree with the other posts. I don't think the birds really know what's going on, only that things have changed. Give them some time and they will come around.

Thanks everyone! This is so good to know. My hens are so sweet and they usually come up and get so excited to see me. They've been in a corner of the run most of the day and weren't excited about the tomatoes I brought them. I'm glad to hear they will be fine tho!

Yes, if you did the deed where the girls could see or hear, they knew what was going on.

Also, if you murdered my husbands, I wouldn't come to the door to get treats from you either. The good thing is that I hold a grudge for something like that a lot longer than a feather person would.

haha
and don't worry, they'll forgive you! Maybe they can get remarried.
