Sad Loss! any suggestions?

I am no expert....but I found one of those....though about 8" longer coiled on a plastic roof of a playhouse...freaked me out...didn't look like the 'normal' earthworm...and coiled and raised it's "head/end" like a snake...which is what I thought it was...my FIL was here that day...he said...(he is from this area, flat, swampy) oh...."that's a horsetail worm"....apparently....these creatures are worms...earthworm type...that are native to this area...maybe others...but I never saw one like that in my LIFE!
I noticed you are from MS...so I'm thinking similar topography.
Anyway, I would still treat like I found a round worm...but that is what they tell me about the 'things' that grow down here.

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful advice and kind words. I do thik this was cocci that killed my babies and will keep all of your advice in mind for the future. As for the wqorm I found, I think it is some other type of worm, not a round worm, and was trying to escape the water. Thanks again for all your help.
