Sad morning...Help?

Well, I thought I was doing everything right, but I must have missed something. All were active and eating last night, but I got up this morning and one of my chicks (got them Thu. a.m.) - either a Wellsumer or Speckled Sussex - was dead. She was in a position like she had been resting - which I though she was though she wasn't in the "lamp zone" and just didn't wake up. Her little crop was slightly puffy and her vent was mostly clean though it looked like she had a small bit of clear matter that was stuck to her vent feathers. I know chicks just sometimes die due to genetic things, but I'd like some input as to possible problems on my part.

Oh, they are so tiny and sweet - it just crushes to lose one!

What is your brooder set up? What is the temp? Is it possible the chick got wet (like really wet). I had a problem once. The corner of the towel I had on the bottom accidentally got into the waterer and it drained all thewater out and got the bottom towel really wet. I lost 2 chicks that day.

If the chick had access to water, food and heat, I don't really think there is much more you could have done.

Sorry about your chick. Sometimes they just die. It isn't all that unusual to lose one.

If there is a reason, the most likely reason is temperature, but really, there probably isn't a reason if the others are ok.

I'm using the XL Rub. Md. w/pine pellets covered with paper towel. I have the heat bulb and the temp is 95 directly under but at one end of the bin. I am using a quail waterer (has a smaller trough width so they cant get in it - but they can drink fine), they are eating Purina Start & Grow (has med.) and they had gro gel when I got them. I also have given them a little chick grit with the feed.

Sometimes some dont make it. I don't know what a quail waterer looks like but I always put marbles in mines water container. Maybe this will help.

I saw the quail waterer at TS when I went in to buy the chick mash. It looks like a smaller version of the mason jar screw-ons. It has a trough that is only about 3/4 inches wide so they really can't get in it. It seems to work well as no one has gotten wet...yet. I have one of the gal size plastic ones for later.
