Sad news

I am sorry for your loss. All you can really do is try to think of ways to make sure your remaining chickens are better taken care of. (Not that you did a bad/poor job, there's just usually some place you could improve.)

I started putting out a baking dish of water for my chicks when it got so hot. They liked standing knee-deep (at a couple of weeks old) in the cool water. My big chickens usually got their run washed down until puddles were left behind. I am seriously considering a kiddie pool when they go on clearance. No, I don't have ducks nor plan to get ducks (I remember how dirty they get!!!), but I think the adult chickens would enjoy standing in cool water as much as the chicks did. With my luck though it'll probably be cold all next Summer and they won't be able to use the pool.

Anyway, enjoy your chickens. Don't be ashamed of your feelings for that rooster. It shows you cared for him. Be blessed!

Silly to cry at the loss of a loved pet? I think not. If you lost a dear cat or dog would you cry? Most people would. Just because it happened to be a chicken matter not. I have lost 2 in the past week to the heat and humidity and yes I cried my eyes out and told them how sorry I was they had to go. These were birds that I have had for several years, so was quite attached to them. Crying helps the healing process. So go ahead and cry, and some of us will even cry along with you. ((((hugs)))

And its ok to cry! I know I would too, and tons of other people would too! You would never expect to get attached to chickens, but you do anyways! Dont forget, you are not alone.

Hang in there

I am very sorry to hear about your roo. I like the baking dish idea. I have kiddie pools filled with water but only the turkeys use them. I have never seen a chicken in one of them. Not sure if they just don't know how to get over the edge but I am thinking now maybe I could put a board on it so they can walk up and in/out...hope your other chickens do okay. Crying is so normal...it's okay to care about them and get attached to them. Don't feel silly.

hi, sorry for your loss.....i was really sad when my beautiful lil bantam roo got run over about a month ago....i have a chicken that is about to hatch eggs and i hope i some of the eggs are still from that roo and i get one that looks like him....it was a black chested red bantam and my new roo is white and yellowish(my avatar). im really hoping to get one from my old roo.....

It is human to cry about the loss of one we love be it an animal or human being - be proud that you loved your Rooster - he loved you too... so sad that you have to face the loss of him despite your best efforts to save him!
