sadly, I am stupid

You could get what is called shade cloth. Nurseries use it for protection of delicate plants from summer sun. I would guess a local nursery would have it. Tarps rot due to ultraviolet. I expect that shade cloth and bird netting does too. Also, you could try stringing polypropylene twine all about overhead. Hawks and owls do not like it , but it must be pretty closely strung to work. It is fairly durable and very cheap.

Got ours in home depot.
So sorry for your loss. we had a hawk nest in the back of the yard this year very scary, seen him once sitting on my run gate.

We roofed our run with hardware cloth. I got it at Home Depot, but whether or not they stock it is rather iffy.

TrueValue hardware stores can generally order either netting or hardware cloth for you. Just ask.

So today i found what I think is a peace offering from the hawk. A mouse- just it's head and then its tail with entrails attached lying next to it.

Is it legal to kill hawks and if so can i just shoot it or do i need miss jayne and her trusty shovel?

Is it legal to kill hawks

Depends on where you are...in Maine it's illegal to kill a bird of prey..

Also, agway sells netting..on-line too if needed. Home depot has a get deer fence too (not orange)
Wishing you speedy solution!

Today my husband told me he found a hawk sitting on the gate to the little girls side of the chicken run THANK GOODNESS we had put deer net over the top!!!!!! I've already lost 2 to a hawk before moving them to the "big house"!

We have 2 different kinds of net one from Tractor Supply this year and it's really thin, the stuff we used on the little girl side is from last year and 5 times thicker!

The neting is worth the energy of putting it up.

Want to hear a stinker, the next door people's chicken free range all day and live in a shed. My girls are in a really nice coup with a 100x20' yard and I've lost 3 to a coon and almost some to a hawk. Go figure...

One of the local mini golf places near us has THE BEST ice cream... When we go there for it, we eat there - outside under an open pavilion. They use the fishing line, and I have never even ONCE seen a bird in there, so I'd think that could work pretty well

Sorry about the hawk problem. I just caught one sitting 4 feet from my coop

Told hubby to get ready for hawk stew next time I see him out there! (Just lost a BA - no evidence of anything - she just vanished into thin air, the hawk is the only thing we can figure out
