Safe around water?

I’m in West Virginia. In the higher mountain part. I intend to have a light in their coop but no heating.

Guess you'll have to decide to use bowls and change them or go with a heated waterer.
Here it can stay well below freezing, day and night, for weeks on end.

So if you have a light, you've got power in coop.
Is light for you to see or supplemental light for winter laying?

It’s not as cold here as it is for you. The light will be for both the egg laying and for me to see. I hadn’t thought of a heated water tank. I’ll just be running an extension cord for the light so probably not a heated water tank

They won't need supplemental lighting their first year, and it can be tricky to balance.
I run my heated(50W) waterer and my lights off an extension cord.
I use a headlight for night chores.

I have one that’s a quart jar size that I add water and then flip upside down. It’s for baby chicks according to Tractor Supply where I bought it. When I flip it I lose a lot of the water. Plus as the chicks have grown I’m not sure it’s big enough. I thought a bowl would be easier to clean and refill. I could just dump it, rinse it and refill it.

I'm mostly curious as to how you lose a lot of water flipping it. I use the same ones for my chicks and birds that I keep separate and I lose maybe a handful of drops flipping it. Are you doing it fast or are you turning it really slow and carefully?

I use bowls for anything that's getting feathers, without a lamp and just don't fill it higher than their hips.
