Okay I can not believe that no one has made a feeder to keep outside that nasty field mice can get into. I know GrandPa's but it is too expensive to be practical. Any body have something that is secure and able to feed the chicks?????

How about a treadle feeder?

ETA: Won't work for chicks when they are still small, a chick and a mouse weigh about the same.

I built my own grandpas feeder, It was very easy to make and worked fantastically. It was all wood with a good finish and paint and under a cover.

How about this setup?

I have 70 chickens. (yes I need to join chickens annonymous) I don't know how many I would have to have built. How much food do they hold?

We chose a trigger style feeding system for our chicks to make the feed inaccessible to mice. We purchased our triggers from a BYC member (rockhaven) who also sells them on ebay. We have one in the coop and one out in the run. The chicks took to it very quickly. They peck at the trigger and a bit of feed falls out for them to gobble up.

Here is a another thread about the feeder https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=533758&p=3 and here is a video of the trigger in use(not mine)
.
