Safe materials for watering system?

Hi all,

I have a system now that consists of a 5-gallon bucket, a hose spigot, a length of garden hose, some PVC pipe, and poultry nipples. There is a screw-on cap on the bucket, and a metal bulkhead that connects the spigot to the bucket. I have noticed that the bulkhead is rusting (was supposed to be rustproof), and the the PVC pipes don't have a good drain outlet, so I want to rebuild the whole thing.

What pipe materials are rustproof and safe for watering chickens? Should I be using metal pipes instead of PVC, or should I go all-plastic? I found that even when I sealed the screw-on drains to end of the pipe to serve as a flush point, the threaded ends would leak, so I had to just seal the ends shut.

Thanks for the help!

Did you ever get any good info on this? I've always wanted to make my own watering system, but want to avoid plastic and PVC because leaching worries me. Would love to see what you came up with! :)
