Good afternoon wise chicken farmers,
I was at Tractor Supply looking for a dewormer and the sales associate talked me into buying the Safeguard .5% Dewormer food pellets. The bag says it is for swine, growing turkeys, cattle and horses. Unfortunately, after talking with the vet at Merck, he says I can’t use this product for my hens. Have any of you ever used this product on your hens? Apparently, for growing turkeys you mix a pound of these medicated pellets into 313 pounds of turkey feed for six consecutive days, These medicated pellets must be quite powerful.

Have you opened the package? If not, then take it back and get Safeguard Liquid Goat Wormer or Safeguard Paste (equine).
Dose for either of those is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once then repeat in 10 days for treatment of Roundworms ONLY.
If you are treating other types of worms including Roundworms, but not Tapeworms, then dose at 0.23ml per pound of weight orally once a day for 5 days in a row.

Not sure why the vet said the pellets can't be used, but it's going to be much easier if you direct dose your birds to ensure they get the proper medication. Problem with adding meds to feed is you're depending on the birds to consume enough to be of benefit.
