Hello!

I have a three year old silkie rooster (his name is Bloom) who I believe has worms. He lost a lot of weight, he poop is slightly green, he's less energetic. He still eats though. He's also been sleeping in a nest box which is something he hasn't done for awhile. I lost a hen and this roosters son in the last three weeks I believe to worms but I don't really know. I gave him 1 dose yesterday, and he seems a little more energetic today. I give him "a small pea sized amount" which is what I read that a should do and what I have used before. Its just been so long that I don't remember how many times to treat him.

I have the equine dewormer which is what I have used before.

I thought the dosage was two days and repeat in ten days for as long as it takes for them to recover. But different post here say different things.
Could someone please confirm whether or not its two days and repeat in ten days for as long as it takes for them to recover. If its not could someone please tell me what the correct dosage is.
Thanks so much!

I'm sorry to hear about your losses.

What type of worms are you wanting to treat?

With Safeguard IF you are wanting to treat just Roundworms - dosage is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once, repeat in 10 days.

IF you are wanting to treat other types of worms (including Roundworms) dosage is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally for 5 days in a row.

It would be good to also check him very well for lice/mites.
If you have photos of his poop and of him, that may be helpful as well.

Losing a couple of birds in such a short period of time is concerning. What do you feed, is his crop empty in the mornings, have you added new birds within the last 30 days?
If you happen to lose him, then getting a necropsy so you can get some answers would be a good idea.

I'm not sure what kind of worm it is, but with chickens like this in the past that start to get lethargic this has worked and he has similar symptoms.
I checked him over for lice and didn't see any. I treat the whole flock a few months ago and haven't seen a louse since. I can check him again though.
I can try to get pictures. I'm busy later today so it will be a bit before I get some but Ill try this afternoon/evening. His grain is Green Mountain Feeds Organic Layer pellets and he gets a little scratch in the morning to eat with his hens.
I don't know if his crop is empty in the morning because sometimes my dad lets them out and feeds them and so I dont get to him until after he's eaten. I can take care of him tomorrow and see if its empty.

I have three flocks, one of them is his flock, him and 12 hens and I had a different flock with his son and 15 hens. They were in electronet fencing so they were separated but I guess they could still get to each other through the fence if they wanted to, but they didn't. One of the hens in his flock, who was at probably three years old, but I dont know she may have been 4ish. She was perfectly fine and then one day she was out in her run, lethargic, not walking, eyes barely open, very sick. And she had green poop. I brought her into the barn and gave her a heat lamp and got her to drink a few sips but she wouldn't eat much. she died two nights later.
about 2 weeks after that, Bloom (the sick rooster)s son slowly got ill over the course of a few days. I was not here this is just what I heard. I went out to visit in the morning after I got back and he was dead. I realize I should have had them necropsyed but I didn't. A few days later we put all the hens with Bloom in our big hoop house which is where all the chickens spend the winter. Bloom started getting sick the day BEFORE we put them all together though so I don't think thats why he has it.
Do you think I should treat him for five days in case he has roundworm and that way if its not round worm it will treat the other things it could be?
Thanks and sorry my reply is so long

So five days in a row and then repeat in ten days? or just five days and that's it?
And is it approximately a small pea sized amount?
I'll let you all know how hes doing.

Safeguard dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally for 5 days in a row.

Safeguard is given by weight. Weigh your rooster, then calculate how much you need to give him. You can draw out the paste into another syringe to make it easy to measure.

Give for 5 days in a row.

I gave him the five doses but something else seems to be wrong. He appeared to be getting better after I started treating him, he gained a little weight and was a bit more active but now I think hes worse then when I started. Also his crop was not empty this morning, its very full and hard but he was hungry and he ate and drank. He was with about twenty other chickens so there's always a big crowd around the food and scratch in the morning since hes sick I dont think he got much I grabbed him less then a minute after he went out to eat so he could not have eaten enough to make his crop hard. I have him by himself now and he ate and drank and then I came to write this. I have not seen him poop but hes been with the others so its hard to tell. I will be able to see now that hes by himself though. he does have poop on some of his butt feathers it lokks white and green. He also seems dizzy sometimes when he walks he will stumble or lean sideways a little. He doesn't do that all the time just most of the time.
I dont know what I should do...I really dont want to loose him he was my first silkie and hes very nice. What should I do?
