Out to pasture
I just read an article on the Chicago Tribune newspaper website (Chicagotribune.com) regarding a safer way to conduct Craig's list transactions in the city of East Chicago, IL. After reports of people being robbed when they meet up to buy articles from Craig's list advertisers, the police department thought of a way offer some security.

They are allowing the use of their well lit parking lot with surveillance cameras and lobby for those wishing to have safe conduct. On certain days of the week they will have an officer available if the buy/sell parties prefer his presence.

Wouldn't this be a great if other cities and towns would adopt the same practice? I have never purchased off Craig's list due to "buyer beware concerns." I would be more apt to participate with this safer method. Would you?

Have any readers experienced this. Does your city or town participate in any way to oversee the safety of transactions? Could you encourage them to do so.

Not even criminals can break the gun laws. That would be illegal.

Wouldn't it be great if more people just used common sense so it doesn't tax the resources of our great officers instead? I have bought and sold on Craigslist and Armslist several times in recent months and guess what, I didn't go to anyone's home or have them com to mine. Each time I met the individuals in places that I knew where highly trafficked and taped (such as the parking lot of the emergency room that I am security at). I also had other people aware of where I was, what I was doing and even watching from a distance. All that added to the fact that I keep my own personal protection with me at all times.

We need to encourage people to take responsibility for their own safety, not to leave it up to other people instead.

I may be unusual or just lucky, but I have folks come to my house. Per my honey's request either he or my Big Boy are here. I don't do lots of selling, but recently had a few folks out buying hens. Honey's had folks out to buy vehicles, parts, tires, things like that. I don't feel we're especially security conscious, but we do have a perimeter fence and a large quite assertive dog that's seen by everyone who comes here. I think it doesn't take but a glance for folks to see we really don't have much to steal

The worst thing we've had was the very nice stoned hippie guy who bought chickens. He brought totes to transport them in, but no lids. Plus, he had a dog in the car

. But, from the smell of the interior, I'm thinking no occupant of that car was going to be too terribly energetic, let alone aggressive

When I've bought something from someone who didn't want me to come to their house, I've always suggested the parking lot of the Grange Co-op. I'm usually going to the feed store anyway, right?
