Safety of mulching materials around coop and yard...

We are trying to do some landscaping of our yard, and our local Tree Trimming company has mulch that is already starting to compost, which is what we want. So I guess there is no way of knowing what the trees are, and I do know that Cedar is supposed to be a no-no. I know Cedar is dangerous in their coop and run, but if some of it is mixed in the mulch in our yard, will it hurt them??? I let them out daily for a period of time to run loose while I'm out working in the yard, so they can get some grass and extra bugs. I just want them to be safe!

From what I understand the oils in the cedar chips can irritate the lungs of various animals when used in a confined space (such as a chicken coop). I don't think there would be any danger of this happening outside in your yard.

cedar mulch is safe since it out in the open. Cedar is popular because it's inexpensive but it's not very nutrient rich which is something you might want to consider if you want to turn it under to improve your soil.

When we lived in northern California we were able to get 50 pound bags of rice hulls. A pretty pretty (and unusual) mulch the broke down well. Coffee grounds make great mulch, we get the used grinds (a five gallon bucket every two days!) from a local coffee shack. The grounds hold moisture and look great too. The worms in our worm bin love it but I am trying to find out if the caffeine is bad for chickens before I start using it in the backyard.
