I just wanted to post a reminder to all with young kids and young ducks, chickens etc... Watch the heat lamp. My girls were playing with the duckling before dance today and then as usual we went rushing out of the house because we were running late, well the top didn't get put on correctly. When we got home I thought, hmm... our neighbor must be burning something, when I opened the front door I found it was our house! The front room was full of smoke, the heat lamp was sitting right on the shavings, melted hole through the container, on to the rug, scorching the hardwood floors beneath. Fortunately no flames but if I'd been just a few more minutes, I hate to think of what would have happened. I know accidents happen and I'm kicking myself that I didn't check it. Amazingly the two ducklings and two chicks are fine!! I was so thankful for that and that my house isn't a pile of ashes it could have ended far more terribly. These feathered friends are an absolute joy to raise, lets keep it joyous.

thank you for the reminder, we all can use it. Thank God your house is safe!

OMG this is horrible! We have our lamp wired to the ceiling joists in our basement so that it cant get to the shavings etc.. because I have a major fear of something like this happening!

I thought the way mine was would have been safe too. I think I may invest in a real brooder.

Your chics and ducklings are very thankful that they were destined to only be lightly smoked and not bbq'd

So scary! Glad you came home when you did. I'd hate to think of what could've happened. I had a run-in with a heat lamp and melting through a plastic lid and my dining room table while I was cleaning the brooder. I totally forgot the lamp was on and next thing I smell is plastic/wood melting and smoking. I can't believe I was standing right there. It happens SO fast!!!! I'm so happy your little chicks and ducklings are OK! And thanks for the reminder!

Yikes! I'm glad your house, family and birds are okay.
