sale price for processed meaties?

But like I said, unless people are used to organic food prices, grocery store chicken IS your competition.

Only for those that see the $ and not the value or just can't afford it. Most of the folks in my area are strapped for cash and will prefer their industrial birds however there are those that will drive out of their way to buy a pastured meatie and gladly pay $10 a piece. A buddy of mine advertised his on craigslist and sold out the same day he butchered and dressed his birds.

Exactly- that's all I'm saying. There are definitely people who will, I sell mine for $10/apiece, and I sell all of them that I offer, but mostly because the few people who are willing to pay double usually want to stock up, so they buy a lot of birds.

We charged $3.00 per pound for our first meaties. For our two friends who helped process, we only charged $2.50 per pound. We figured that it costs us around $2.25 per pound to raise them. Our birds averaged about 4.5 lbs. We could have easily sold more birds than we had available.

We have no problem selling our 5-6 pounders at $15 and 9-10 pounders $28 and 15-17 pounders for $55. Most people that are into the organic life style will pay extra for quality. We don't ship and all birds are picked up at a member’s location so we don't have all the traffic and the possibility of diseases brought onto our location. Most of our customers order 40 to 65 at a time, the record for a single order was last year for 200 by a company that gave them out to its' employees and have placed an order for 206 for this year. In this repressed economy here in SW Michigan it is surprising that we have almost doubled our pre-sales so far this year. I remember a time when it was a struggle to get $5 a bird no matter how big they were, but we hung in there and now people are seeing the value of chemical/antibiotic/hormone clean foods. This type of person is usually financially stable and willing to pay for quality.
