Sally's GF3 thread

I have 5 traps going. Cleaned out the neighborhood. When I have about 5,000 flies, I drain the juice into another handy jar. Dump the dead flies into my sanitary sewer. Clean up the jar, so there is no odors on exterior . Return the juice I saved back into my fly trap. Back in business. This way I only purchase bait at the beginning of the season.
My reason for cleaning traps between refilling; I want the flies to search out the source of the nasties. (which is inside trap) Not be happy with just landing on the exterior surface.
Have been doing such ever since I had chickens. My main reason for doing,,, besides my obvious not liking flies.
Don't want neighbors thinking flies are a result of my chicken keeping.
There are many peeps walking their dogs on the grass next to home/street. Not all are courteous to pick up after pets. But most do. :thumbsup
Those that I do find, and pick up myself,,, are swarmed with flies. I have this special pooper picker upper. Yes those sausages go into the sewer as well.

I hosed off the traps/lid when I dumped the flies. I hadn't thought of trying to save the bait mix. 🤔 Since I'd already bought the refills, I would have used them anyway.

But washing the outside is a really good point. As you said, you want the flies to go in the trap, not just walk around the outside.

Hubby suggested I find a different spot for them, as he said he could smell them when he was sitting on the porch. He suggested putting them on the other side of the house, but that area is almost totally shaded, and I thought flies might not be as prevalent back there. So one trap is hanging down by the compost pile and the other is hanging from a tree branch near the garden.

It's election day. The township where I live is electing a new board. Oh, my it has been a nasty, rancorous business. It's all about ONE issue: commercial solar on some of the farm fields around the township.

I wish I had thought to ask the candidate who came to my house, "Ok, put that issue aside. What are your qualifications for running the township?" But I let her lead the conversation. Mostly because I was trying to get her to leave so I could finish cooking dinner.

I know, you want to catch people at home, and around dinner is a good time for that. But really? I just want to you to give me the the printouts you have and leave.

The company that wants to put in the solar fields had a presentation at one of the high school cafeterias. We went. That candidate saw me, saw that I was chatting in a friendly, attentive way with one of the company reps, and gave me a look. Not sure what the look meant.

I wanted to tell her, "Yeah, I'm going to be friendly and attentive when I ask questions -- of anyone. I give people the chance to speak their mind, tell me information I want to know, without prejudicing the moment. Just like I was when you came up on my porch a few days ago."

The one BIG question: Where will these solar fields be? remains unanswered.

The woman on my porch said, "They're keeping it a secret. They won't tell us."

The company rep said, "We can't say definitively, as we have to wait until after the new board is elected, and there is a long permitting process to go through, 6-12 months. Some land owners have expressed interest, but we would have to evaluate the sites much more thoroughly before we started even looking at getting permits."

We have them northeast of me. What used to be miles of cotton fields is now solar panels, row after row after row. An eye sore in my opinion but I'm just someone who misses all those beautiful white cotton fields. Times change. I hope we don't end up regretting it.

No, they have to wait until the new board is elected. One slate of candidates is rabidly anti-solar. The other slate is open to the idea. If the anti-solar people are elected, they will take their project elsewhere, as they will never get the permits.

There are acres of farm field within walking distance of my house. In fact, we pass by them whenever we walk Freya.

This issue has severed friendships that have been in families for decades.

Well, this is going to be interesting... to say the least.

There were 5 positions open on the Township board. 5 pro and 5 anti solar candidates ran. Really, that was the defining difference; all are Republican.

The pro guy running for Twp Supervisor won. The rest of the elected are anti. They will run unopposed in November. I don't know where the two people who are the remaining board members stand.

I am embarrassed to admit we have never gone to a board meeting. Not in 30 years of living here. That will probably change.
