salmon faverolles

BF-bantam fowl
LF-large fowl

alot of the hatchery faverolles got alot of black or "smuttiness" in their feathers that you dont typically find in good Faverolles. Many of them do not have fifth toes, missing muffs and beards, no featherings in legs or didnt have the confirmation of a Faverolles which they are deep in girth, more block in shape than Leghorn shape. And sometimes their disposition is questionable. If you dont care about the color and the proper standard of Faverolle and want a pet, you certain can order thru the hatchery.

Yes a few of us in here have some GOOD Faverolles, just ask alot of questions about their stock and where their bloodlines come from, disposition, colors, etc.

I used to raise Salmon, Blue Salmon, Mahogany and Black Faverolles, mostly in bantam sizes. They are very good egg layers which it is rare to find in quantity in SQ or breeder's bantams/LF than most hatcheries.

I have a couple dozen of them and am quite fond of them. They are pretty hardy and take the cold climates well. I live in Massachusetts and do not heat my coops. They lay well into the winter for me when many other breads have stopped. Please be carefull where you buy them from however.

Faverolles were my first chicks, I've had them for about 1.5 years now. This was taken late last summer:

One thing I was not warned about was their propensity to fly up onto things, like trees, the top of their tractor, and fatally the fence to the dog yard.

They have wonderful soft feathers, which have been pretty well removed by the roosters! I have saddles now.

Now for the good stuff - Mine are from a hatchery. I think the color variations are very pretty, they are curious and very gentle. I was surprised that two went broody this summer. They just hatched nine little cuties. Some of the babies will be pure Faverolles, the others are Buckeye hen with the Faverolles roo. The hens try and look very tough if you bother their chicks, they are about as frightening as a cotton ball.

But they are being very good mothers.

I have two roosters who are very pleasant. I did not get a chance to handle them much when they were chicks so they are not fond of being touched but they follow me around with the hens. When I do need to handle them they scream for a few seconds then settle right down. They have NEVER been aggressive.

The hens laid steadily all winter and other than the two broodies they have been laying well this summer. I'm glad I have them and I'm glad I have a few new faverolles chicks in the flock.

This leads me to my next train of thought...

I need a breeder who's willing to somehow get chicks/hatching eggs to me here in California!

I would want to eventually use this stock for breeding, etc. So I don't think hatchery Faverolles would fit the bill. (I'm a bit of a perfectionist.) I could do hatching eggs, especially since I can't accommodate these birds now. Waiting until next year would allow me time to set up an incubator and new brooder, etc.

So... are there any Salmon Faverolle breeders out there on BYC who want to help me get some chicks/hatching eggs next Spring? I'm willing to put some money towards getting these beautiful birds.

EweSheep, would you be willing to help me out with this little endeavor??

THANKS!

I have 2 SF's and I LOVE them! They are so chatty and friendly. Both of mine like to be held and are always underfoot. My 3 year old loves to carry them around and pet them. They are the most docile chickens I have ever owned and also very curious and intelligent. They lay smallish eggs every day to every other day. They have never flown over the fence at all, they always stay in the pen.

Mine are also hatchery stock, from Ideal, and they have black in their beards. One of them is red brown and not anywhere near normal SF coloring. But since they are just pets it doesn't matter to me. I hatched some of their babies recently with an Easter Egger rooster and the babies are so adorable!

I only have 2 Salmon fav.s right now. 1 LF & 1 bantam. The LF is Sammy, and the bantam is Mini Me

Sammy was 2 when I got her, and didn't really want to be bothered, but she has come around, and is curious and very sweet, but at the same time, she don't take no crap from nobody

I had moved Mini and her buddy Party (a silkie) into the coop, and they would cuddle up with Sammy at night. Mini hasn't been acting herself the last couple days, so her and Party are in their own area for now. Sammy was my best layer before she got hurt (long story). She was giving me an egg a day, while my others were going every other day. Here are some pics:

No apology needed at all! I actually wasn't sure which way I would go originally. I'm glad that you shared the picture of your lovely birds with me and all of the great information!

Thanks!
