salmon faverolles

i'm planning on getting some faverolles next spring, i was wondering if anybody who already has them would mind telling me a little about the breed? i think they're gorgeous and am really excited.

i've read that they're pretty docile, friendly birds. anyone else who's got some experience want to share?

I'm glad you asked because I'm planning on getting some too. My biggest concern is that I've read in several places that they aren't a very hardy breed?

I have one - about 3 months old. I have a picture of mine in my BYC page. She seems pretty docile and a little more standoffish than my other breeds as far as being picked up - some of my others really seem to enjoy interacting whereas she is just as happy not to. Granted I'm only going off a sample size of one. Overall though a fine bird. Very pretty.

I have 5 hens. They are so rotten! I have to keep them in with my bantam Cochins because all my standard free range birds pick on them.

The roos take advantage of them and the other hens push them around. They are sweet girls but a few are annoying that they talk all the time! They talk about laying an egg then talk about having laid the egg and then ask all the others when they are going to lay their eggs! Geez!
But then yours may not be like this. I have one from a different place and she is not so much like that.
I have heard others complain about their going broody but mine have never gone broody. I suppose the bantam Cochins use the boxes so much they feel they never need to but I would not care if they did or not. I have chicks that I let run into all the pens when others hatch them out and the Sally Favors are good with them as well so maybe that helps them realize they don't need to raise their own.

I did hatch an egg out this year from my bantam Cochin roo and one of my Sally Favors. It's a roo but almost too cute. He has the muffs and beard and heavily feathered feet with a wide chest.

I have both Bantam and standard. Temperment, well one of my Banty's is named Sweet Pea, just a clue. They are sweet , docile and the ones that are laying are laying well. While we do not have horrible winters here, it got in the teens here last winter and mine were fairly young, they did fine. They also are really cute to look at.

I have 2 Faverolles that are 3 months old. I ordered 3 but I did loose one within the first 24 hrs after arriving - they had a hard trip. They took 3 days to get to me and on 2 of the nights the temp was below freezing!!! (It was the last week of May)

I am very fond of the breed. I have noticed that they are more shy than my Orpingtons. But they are very cute, curious, and sweet. They are just as strong and lively as the other birds I have.

It sounds like their temperment will suit the rest of my flock, (Orps, Lorps, and Dellies.) and I'm glad to hear that they are steady layers.

Does anybody have pictures of their birds? I've heard their colors can vary in shade. From light creme to almost a reddish-salmon color? Anybody have any idea?

I used to raise LF and BF Faverolles and I love them to death!

I would not buy them from the hatchery but if you dont care about the coloring and type, then by all means get them.

Temperments and disposition, I never had a MEAN one, they are all docile and friendly. Some can be shy and aloof, while others would demand your attention whenever you are out there. They are also quiet birds. Not broody, not in my case. Very good layers and they are the best in that regard of the bantams I've had.

They would be henpecked by other breeds, simply because of their laid back nature and they are not fighters.

All my hens survived in the zero temps without any heat in the coop, and never lose one to their weakness. They are pretty hardy to me.

All of my Faverolles came from Mike Stapish and Rose Isgrigg lines. The Mahogany Faverolles I got from Sandhill was not too strong, every one of them died before they reach maturity or almost to laying age. It was disappointing to say at the least. So I avoided Sandhills Faverolles. Some of us BYCers got some good stock!

a few questions about your reply. what's the difference between lf and bf faverolles? do you want to elaborate on your concerns about hatchery faverolles a little more? and as far as breeders go, could these chicks be found here on byc?
