Our daughter contracted salmonella- she’s 3 so we just assumed she didn’t wash hands after handling chickens one day. No big deal. Today, my husbands coworker showed him that “In the latest multistate salmonella outbreak linked to backyard poultry, Pennsylvania reported the most cases with 14. This outbreak, which has resulted in 104 illnesses and one death, is traced to backyard poultry.”
So, with that being said. What should we be doing as chicken owners for our flock and when using eggs? Should we treat them with an antibiotic and/or should I not be using them raw- like for mayo?
I’ll also say the 4 new chickens, that have been integrated into our flock for a few weeks now, are probably the source, they’re not laying eggs yet.

My understanding with salmonella, is that it in a natural occurring bacteria in chicken feces.
I always wash my hands after handling, and tending to my chickens.
Do you have any detailed information on this latest salmonella outbreak.??
Is it from people eating their chicken's eggs?? or from them handling chickens and their eggs,,,,, and then not doing proper hygiene??

With the additional chicken owners that entered the chicken keeping hobby, many may be NOVICE and not aware of the bacteria sources. :idunno

E.coli bacteria is another serious contender to be on the lookout for. Its source is feces from other animals, as well as humans. That is why its important to always wash hands after using bathroom. Definitely before handling food.
Also when cleaning up after pet dogs, and cats.

WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :highfive:
