My chickens put me in the hospital with salmonella. They are not even sick though. Is there any way to keep from destroying my flock? Is there a cure for them?

I was curious about your question since I know very little about Salmonella so I spent a little time researching it. My first thought, even before I started researching was: "How do you know for sure it was the chickens, since I do know there are many other sources of infection (only a couple of years ago, spinach was recalled across the US due to Salmonella)"

I found the following on Wikipedia:

Quote:
After reading that, I am even more dubious about it being the chickens you got it from. The same page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmonella) also states that it takes massive quantities to make an adult who is not immune-compromised, sick.

Sorry, but I didn't see anything on that page to directly answer your question about if it is the chickens, is there a way to ensure they are not carriers.

The only way to know if your chickens are the carriers is to have them tested. You may or may not have gotten the illness from them.
