In light of the recently reported salmonella outbreak at Mt. Healthy, I am just wondering what could/should be done for chicks purchased from there. Should they be culled because they could be carriers? How can you determine if they are carriers? If they are a carrier, will the eggs be contaminated?

The report actually says people stated that they had been cuddling and kissing their chickens..........

Chickens are filthy animals. Any one who kisses chickens is asking to get sick.

Salmonella is everywhere in the environment, there is a reason for washing your hands......

True, but what I want to know is whether or not I need to be worried about the two chicks I purchased infecting the rest of my flock and whether their eggs will be safe to eat. Any ideas?

I think you could get their droppings checked by your vet. I have worked in hospitals for many years, and they test people for it all of the time.

Mount Healthy needs to have the breeding flocks tested. By refusing to use flocks that have not been certified salmonella free, they could eliminate this problem.....

But people really need to use good hygeine at all times. And stop kissing chickens!
