It’s pretty sad that many vets even farm vets are not willing, too greedy or do not have the knowledge for poultry. I called so many even several counties away… I am so thankful he was willing to see me and treat our hen and was down the street. It was a good training experience for the vet techs there too. I should have charged them! $95 was worth the trip but helped me not stress as much out.

Not sure if anyone will see this. But I have a follow up question. I posted on another poultry forum and someone mentioned that the antibiotic that I was given from the vet was the wrong type and that it doesn’t treat salpingitis. I am no vet and I doubt they are either. But now I’m questioning if the antibiotic treatment was the right for her.

Honestly, she looks and is acting sooo much better. Tomorrow is her last day of treatment.

But I wanted to get your opinions on the antibiotic that was prescribed by the veterinarian.

Label states: SMZ 200mg/TMP 40mg per 5mls"

Which is sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and trimethoprim (TMP) This combination is also known by the brand names Bactrim, Septra, and Sulfatrim.

We are not vets, so I would follow your vet’s recommendations. Bactrim is an excellent antibiotic for a lot of different things. It treats skin infections, UTI, coccidiosis, fowl cholera, coryza, and ear infections among others. It may treat salpingitis because it is affective against E.coli. Many vets use amoxicillin or others. So glad that she is doing better.

This is my story about Pip, my Bielefelder who had salpingitis. I treated her with amoxicillin, and the later with lotus leaf extract. I think both bought her some quality time. She lived for 15 months after she laid her first lash egg.

But yes, first you have to know which hen laid the lash egg.

Lotus leaf extract? Did it work? What is the dose?
