From the behaviors and symptoms, I believe my hen, Sandy, may have salpingitis. I would welcome your thoughts about if you agree, what else I should check, and any treatment recommendations. Please don't just respond that I should take her to a vet - I am planning to do just that, but am hoping there is some wisdom and experience here as well.

Thanks in advance,
Curt

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)

Easter Egger, age 2-3 years, weight as yet appears unchanged

2) What is the behavior, exactly.

Sandy has become lethargic starting two days ago. She spent the day in the nest box, and has exhibited the following behaviors since then:

  • has not laid an egg in 4 days (usually I get 2 eggs every three days)
  • leaking urates
  • today I found a lash egg' (a caseous mass of pus) - I have a photo, but I do not have permission to attach items
  • lethargic - she spent most of the last 2 days in the nest box, and when she is out, does not follow the rest of the flock, as per her usual behavior

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?

Today (April 28) is the third day

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?

No

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.

No

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.

Nothing I am aware of

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.

I have seen her drinking as recently as yesterday, she pecked in the yard some, and today I fed her some mashed up feed (which she ate, but with less enthusiasm than I would have expected)

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.

Runnier than usual, although I have only seen two of hers recently that I can positively identify

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?

I started an antibiotic today (but cannot remember the specific medicine - I will have to call the vet) today. I have done one dose this AM. The frequency is 4 drops twice a day

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in
stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?

Unsure at this time

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.

I would, but am not permitted to post photos. If someone can tell me how, or authorize me, I will post.

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use

Coop is pine shavings
Run is straw over dirt
2 hours a day free-ranging in the grassed back yard.
