Thanks for all the responses! The building is 8x12 feet, with one third of it feed room and two thirds for the birds. The nest boxes are 12x18 inches. I've read from others that a 2x4 works well for a roost and I will definitely put poop boards under the revised roost. I started out with 12 chickens all together, but unfortunately had to cull two roosters that were chasing my 2 year old!! And we have lost a total of 3 to fox - we are surrounded on all four sides by corn field and the fox are pretty brave! They took one of the hens in broad daylight in the front yard - all that was left was a pile of red feathers
So we are left with 7 hens, which I think will be a comfortable number to have in the coop over the winter. The power is currently turned off to the coop but the outlets generally have safety covers on them.
