My chicken coop🐓
Hey. I have a 4 year old chicken who constantly gets sick. A couple months ago she had a respiratory infection. Now she is just very slow no other symptoms her tail is not droopy crop is fine. She layed a good egg a week ago. I'm so lost. She walks around VERY slow and hardly eats or drinks. Any help @azygous would be great.

Keep in mind I literally am having to save her EVERY month from something. I don't know if putting her down is a option either since I can't do that myself. No other birds are infected

When a chicken keeps getting sick, often there is an underlying factor such as cancer or a chronic reproductive infection or an avian virus that is hammering the immune system. Also, following any treatment involving an oral antibiotic, a crop yeast infection can occur which would need treating.

In this case would it be the best to just get her put down by a vet? Also do you know if regular vets usually put birds down aswell?

My vet, a long time ago, offered to euthanize a chicken for $5. But I have never taken him up on the offer since I have a gentle method of my own that works well. But I still have a chicken dying in my lap, which some people would find stressful in spite of the non-violence involved.

All you can do is phone around to vet offices and ask.

Will do. I really don't want to let her go but it does sound like I have to. It's just really heartbreaking seeing her getting sick every month and I can only do so much.

Would you care to share your method with us?
