Same chicken??

“Barring” refers to the alternating bands of black and white that makes them look striped. (My 8-year-old grandson calls our BR “Zebra.”) There are other Plymouth Rocks that aren’t barred (white, etc.)

Male BR’s have two bands of white for every black, while females have one each, so the males look lighter/greyer if you unfocus your eyes a bit.

I’ve found a couple breeds with the dark plumage that lay colored eggs. You got lucky and got one! I have one too but she’s laying brown unfortunately. They’re such pretty birds.
