San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Dave's Feed in Lemon Grove closed due to Dave getting old. He had a solo business, not associated with East County Feed. When I was a kid my mom would go to Dave's. When she saw animals being kept in cages without water she'd grab the hose and start watering them. At first it ****** Dave off....LOL...then I think he just gave in. When he married his wife she made sure things were taken care of. If they got in a blind chick or one that was being picked on she'd give it to my mom. That's where my mom got all her chickens. She still has a rooster from there. He's ancient now. Must be 12 yrs. old or more.

Just reminiscing. We all get our animals craziness somewhere. I got it from my mom.

Just LOVE this story Allison! :love :cd

Both mom and dad loved dogs.... Mom was raising Poodles when i was about five. She did her own tail docking back then. 55 years ago she was getting 50 bucks for her puppies. That was a lot of money.

Mom loved horses and I was smitten by the age of 7... Dad was the son of a sharecropper so he knew about poultry and livestock from Cows to rabbits... He hated it.. but when i decided to get chickens he filled me in on a bunch of stuff...

Hi guys, I'm about a 2 hours north of you guys. Does anyone have lady Amherst pheasants for sale? I'm looking for a quad 6 months to a year old.

back in 1960 who knows... I was five and it was my job to hold the puppies for her. she did it with a butcher knife and a hammer. count out the vertebrae whack and give them back to momma... they didn't have their eyes open yet. Babbette (the momma) took care of the wound dressing... she never lost a puppy.

To this day I am very fearful of knifes... and I didn't put two and two together till just about a year ago.

Its really best to have a vet do major stuff like tails and ears and dew claws.... Ears have soo many blood veins in them...

But I really prefer dogs to be just dogs unless they have a medical need for say a dew claw... those things get caught in carpet and get broken off.... Owwie...

They dock horses tails too. The big draft horses like the Budweiser horses... Take em down to just about enough to cover their private parts... The practice is against the law in California.... But its not illegal to bring a docked horse into the state. So breeders here ship their babies off someplace out of state for the procedure...
If it has to be done... it should be done by a qualified vet who understands that this is an amputation.... I don't care for it but if its done that way I try not to think about it.
