new2 - it's called cecal poo and it's ok. They do that every so often.

Nancy - heres one with some containers/nesting boxes in the background. If you flip them over with lid on top, they are also waterproof. Also, easy to clean - just open it and hose it out. Simple but effective!

and old ones with a ramen box in a plastic milk crate attached high on the wall of the coop (my flying bantams like to nest high) they are "japanese" bantams so I think they preferred ramen.
lol

Dana, that was a smart move! A little TLC from the loved ones helps a great deal. And of course the wine is always a plus. So sorry for your heartbreak!

My husband and I drove out to pick up two little ones from Lynne this week and boy are they sweet. Quiet and shy and gentle. Lynne's place was fabulous!
Beautiful chickens and ghinny hens (spell?), goats and trees and lettuce and peace!! It was wonderful and a beautiful day trip.

I can't get my big EE to stop sleeping and pooing in the nestbox. I raised the roost bar this afternoon to a higher altitude!! See if that works. And there is some stinky poo now that wasn't there before. It's only once in a while but, boy, it stinks!

Any ideas? All the rest of their poo is fine. Firm and odorless.
Their vents are clean and free of bugs, and the diet hasn't changed, except for more greens then usual. I planted a small garden inside their pen, filled with Johnny-jump-ups and cale. Had to surround it with chicken wire but they still can get whatever grows through. Give me any ideas!!

SunnyCalifornia-love the box/nest!! What a clever idea!

look up Cecal Poo. Every few poos are soupy and very stinky. I used to think it was their form of peeing.... back before I read up... Uric acid is passed almost in a powder in the regular poo as a white patch. The Cecal poo comes from a part of their digestive tract called the Cecum, which houses most of the bacteria that aid in their digestion of woody plant material.

Hi people I am trying to off load a bunch of chicks TODAY so that my house sitter has less to do at the weekend.

I have 8 split lavender Austrolorp chicks and I think about 6 other chicks if they want them. These are 1-3 weeks old.

The Austrolorps look like regular black Austrolorps but 50 -75% will carry the lavender gene. I did hatch out a lavender chick from the bunch (I am keeping it though

) so the gene is there.

$40 for all 14 chicks (actually If another sale does not go through will add all the spares I have

).

Would need to pick up tonight of tomorrow morning.

The only breeds I have any doubles of are barred rocks, and they are such great layers I'd like to keep them.

The two Polish that are here (one Golden Laced and one White Crested Black) are KILLING me - they lay eggs anywhere and everywhere. On the ground, in a flowerbed, in a planter, etc... I never know where they'll be next. Slightly maddening.

I got an egg that weighed 2.5 ounces yesterday; it is HUGE. I feel very sorry for whomever laid that bomb, 'cause it really must have hurt on the way out. I'm anxious to see if it's a double yolker.

Is somebody still needing double yolkers? I may have two here. Not sure about fertility, but my girls have two roos who are after them constantly.

I am going to go scrape out the coop today; all the talk of stinky poop got me motivated!
