Side note: how long do you think it will take when transitioning over to my feed for the eggs to be considered organic? Hmmm.

I'd say a couple days because apparently chickens digest food in a couple hours. However, if you change the label to "eggs from organically fed chickens" you don't have to wait any time at all because technically it would be true!!

Nancy - thank you! I just came home with two new hens... I got a beautiful, stunning Blue Copper Marans, and her (not quite as gorgeous but still really nice nonetheless) Splash Copper sister. They were kind enough to lay me an egg on the way home, and it's about a six - I'm thrilled! They are in semi-isolation now until I make sure all is well. Pictures soon!

They had a LOT of chickens up there: Marans, Easter Eggers (and they actually called them EEs instead of "Americanas" - I was happy about that), Silkies, turkeys and more. There were a lot of blue and lavender birds in there, too, plus a whole pen of juvies I didn't even check out. It's a bit of a hike up there, but the price sure was right for some nice birds. I told the owner I'd spread the word to our SD Chicken Club.

Second side note: all three of my horse stalls are now filled with chickens. Sigh.
Spread the word... as long as I get the ones I want when I go tomorrow. I have a feeling I will come home with more than I set out for tomorrow..... Good thing my husband doesn't keep count of how many I have. I will just say I got "a few more".

If you are trying to become certified organic, or are selling your eggs as certified organic you can never include those eggs, because to be certified organic any animal has to have been fed organic food from the first day of life and never have been fed anything that isn't.

No, nothing certified. I was just wondering how long it would take for them to transition over to where my feed was fueling their egg production. I'm tossing their eggs for the time being until I can find some sort of scientific thought on this... I try to keep Alex's diet as clean as possible, and I want his eggs to be that way, too.

For my friends and family I always wait a month before I include any new chickens eggs.

When you say tossing what are you doing with them.

Well, I'm not eating them.

My mom is going blow out a bunch of them since they are pretty Marans eggs. I could probably incubate them too, as they were in with a Blue Copper & Splash Marans roosters. Hmmm... how long does sperm stay in there?

Okay - this is SO not true! I was ready to hire him on the spot and put that kid to work. Bring him back!
