San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Sorry, but those are really the scariest looking (healthy) chickens I've ever seen. I don't need to see a crop. Ever.

Can you drape a dickey on those suckers? Maybe throw in a bow tie. They'll look right fancy, they will. And less terrifying.

Welcome, Sarah! We're hitting the fair tomorrow. I haven't been in years, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Here's a few photos of my newest babies, two Silver Spangled Hamburgs.

I have reached a new level of insanity. Yesterday I had a start a separate Google Calendar just for chicken hatching dates and ages... I need help keeping track of how old all these different groups are. Pathetic, eh?
Hi DF,
I'm going to the fair again tomorrow to. I had to make sure i saw the chickens

Very cute Silver Spangled Hamburgs.

I bought some Lavender Orp at the meet up. They are so calm. Compared to my silkies that see my hand coming to feel the feeder, they are so much more mellow. These are my first two lavender orps

Sarah! Our daughters played together that day

Meet ups are scheduled every few months by whoever wants to take it on. We had one the end of Feb, again in the beginning of June, so we may be ready for one the beginning of Sept.
My daughter loved the meet up. Really loved the playground. But i loved seeing all the kids with so much love for their chickens

I did buy some pomegranate jelly that was being sold. Its already gone.... It was good.

Are the meet ups always at the same place or do they move around?

You know the old adage...SHE WHO LAUGHS LAST...
his mama was a frizzle so me thinks you will have some of
these streakers in your future.

I sent the Naked Neck chicks home with Jules because my brooders were full. She informs me than there is one that has a naked chest.

I'm sure it is just feathering in a little slowly, right????

My older Naked Necks went up to the ranch last week so hopefully I'll be hatching Naked Neck chicks soon.

That's the generic name. The patented kind that they sell on TV at 2:00 a.m. are are actually called ChickieDickies. They are illegal in Utah. Because they sound like they should be.

P.S. But wait - if you order now, you get a free CombCapCover and a PastyButtPlucker with any order of 27.

We went to the fair yesterday (Wednesday). The animals aren't too thrashed yet by the idiot populace (as in, "What a cute fluffy chicken - what happens if I poke it with my corn dog stick?"), so it was still fun to walk through the barns.

I also have to admit that I have never seen chickens quite that big, and a few of them actually scared me (Did you see Jurassic Park? I'm pretty sure they used poultry for the CG). Maybe we should let one of the roosters out of the cage the next time the corn dog stick comes out, then we'll see the survival of the fittest. I will buy tickets (but sit far away to watch).

If any of you are into gardening, they have a great planted veggie section in the infield by the horses. They close everything down at 6:00 p.m., so I didn't see the active demos, but the garden was great. Make sure you look at the vertical pallet garden, if you're into different ways of growing.

By the way, if you thought Swifty Swine Pig Races were the weirdest thing in livestock - think again. This year it's turkey races.

We were at the fairer last weekend and had the pleasure of seeing the "wool riders only" show. Basically kids ages 4-7 try to hold on to a sheep for as long as possible. They are calling it mutton busting. Pretty hilarious. The best part is that if your kids wins you have a chance at going to the national finals in... Wait for it... Fresno, CA! Yee-haw!
