San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

My ladies have always been really good layers, their egg production dropped in the big heat wave we had but now I am getting 1 or 2 a day from 15 layers. I have a few more that should start laying any day. But 10 of those 15 have been great layers since they started in Feb, but now the past 4 days almost nothing from them. They have had a constant supply of fresh water and food, plus garden veggies each day as well. They have shade and a nice breeze all day to keep them cool.

Any ideas as to why they decided to take a laying vacation? I want/need they back laying. I sell my eggs though our winery tasting room and last weekend I sold out and that was a slow weekend, this weekend we are having a wine club pickup party and I know I could sell a lot of eggs.... if they were laying. I know they aren't egg machines, it is farming, but such a drastic change is very odd.

Any advice? Thanks!

They may be taking a break or starting molt... Or even if they are cool the heat may have affected them. Or they could need a protien boost....

Mine were giving 7 a day (out of 13 layers) even in this heat. Today I got 4. I think it just happens sometimes in the intense heat. They just need a little hiatus. It happened to me for awhile last summer this time, I ranged anywhere from 2 a day to 10 a day!

We have a extra breeding pair for Birchen Marans from Greenfire Farms about 4 months old and needing a new home if anyone is interested. Purchased as day old unsexed chicks for $100.00 plus shipping. Selling this pair for $200.00. Should be laying in the next couple months.

Is anyone down her NPIP certified? Any pointers on becoming certified, testing, etc?

Thanks!

All you have to do is contact them and request a packet. Make sure every bird is banded. They will have to come out and inspect and take blood samples. There are some fees involved. They charge $100 for the certification and they charge per disease per bird that they have to test. After that as long as you are clean I think that's it. I know if you get another bird at any later time that didn't also come from an NPIP clean source your certificate is automatically null and void until they come back out and test again.

Hope this helps!

We would be more then happy to be his supplier, feed his habit, I mean supply eggs. If La Mesa its within his "where ever" driving distance, we get about 18 dozen fertile eggs a week and sell them for both eating and incubating. PM me for more info.

Hi everyone,

Thankfully it's not as sweltering up here on Palomar, temps hovering around 80, got down the mountain
and Rincon is 94, SHEESH!! Makes the occasional snow easier to put up with realizing that.
My hens slowed down for a time, but are back in full swing, got a couple Guinea Hens from the feed store,
should have asked here first. oh well next time. I have two broooody Buff Silkies,
I swear they will try to hatch a GOLF BALL! Anyone have a bearded Buff Silky they want to loan out? will split eggs..
Hey I just got in a new shipment of green coffee beans and will bring some to next meet-up... (roasted I mean...)
Good Luck to everyone and stay cool!

Glenn
