San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hello everyone,
I have a gorgeous SQ potential silkie (might be a roo but it's still very young)

blue/ partridge who is 2 or 3 months. I am selling him for $10. If interested PM. Thanks

Fraunie & Cryptkeeper, I am so sorry... doesn't seem to matter how long you've had chickens, this kind of thing never gets easier.

Thank UrbanMama! I remembered to call last night, and got the same info. I talked to Rick whom I think is one of the owners...he was very helpful and full of info.

I'm heartbroken bc I am 90% sure my Langshan has Mareks and, to make matters worse, I'm going to have to euthanize her myself tonight. I knew that chicken rearing wasn't ALL fun and games, but in my looooong career of 4 months as a chicken mom this is the first I've had something serious. I've lost two to predators....which with free range in the 'country' I've come to accept. I'm a huge lover of nature and the creatures in it, but being a city girl, the harshness of country life is taking me some getting used to. When I had to euthanize my first dog years back, the whole philosophical side of it drained me. My mind was a mess for months over the idea of playing God. And now, not only do I have to make the decicion, but yeild the axe as well. But the fact that I've considered it, thought long about it, and have prepared myself to do it shows really how much I love that lump of black feathers in my bathtub, and how much chickens.....CHICKENS have made me grow as a person.

give me strength and pray that the rest of my flock (all vaccinated) stay healthy!! Sorry if this was to introspective....I know I'm new here, but I'm a tender soul and needed an outlet somewhere

Thanks
I am so sorry! One of my 17-week pullets (I have four) was limping a couple of weeks ago. I was worried that she might have Marek's, but she recovered and seems okay now. If it is indeed Marek's, you are being a responsible flock owner by not lenghthening her suffering. Having chickens was my idea, but now my husband loves them more than I do. It's amazing how much they've added to our lives. Grieve the loss of your Langshan, but be at peace that you have done everything you can for her.

Anyone ever had a black sex linked hen go broody? Seems strange to me, but I have a hen who has been in her nest since this afternoon. She gets all fluffed up and screeches at you if you get near her. Up to this point she has been an extremely friendly chicken and does not normally mind if you approach her while she is laying an egg. So, either the heat has cooked her little chicken brain or she is trying to go broody. Time will tell..

Anyone have any interesting eggs for hatching?

If she's truly broody, I do have some Silver Campine pullet eggs here I'd like to test for fertility. My only deal is that if they hatch, I would like them back; I'm ramping up a little SC breeding program. The eggs are small, and a BSL hen could probably sit on a lot of them.

I am trying to find a home for my 6 month old Lavender Ameraucana cockerel. He's beautiful, but he does have a single comb. He isnt aggressive, but neither is he friendly. He's more afraid of people if anything. He looks like he'll be a good roo. Gentlemanly to the girls. I hate to get rid of him but my head roo is beating up on him. If anyone is interested, I can post pics after work today.

Miriam (or anybody else who likes to play "Guess That Chick!"), these babies are now 5 weeks... what do you think? I numbered them the same as last time; I know they seem a bit out of order. I'm thinking maybe three pullets, one cockerel? And what do you think about the colors?

Can you tell they really like to eat? The Isbar and the Silkie mix are always staring at the camera.

Here's the Silkie mix if anyone would like to take a guess at gender. (I don't know what breed mama hen was.)

She's still there today, so I will keep you posted. She appears fairly serious at this point. Such a funny chicken
